Harvey W. Hottel, Inc.: A Leader in GeoThermal -HVAC

WASHINGTON, Feb. 27, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Geothermal (GEO) heating and cooling system design and application is growing significantly.  Over the last few years, it has become the number one job (with over 600 GEO-hvac  installations) for Harvey W. Hottel, Inc.  The company, headquartered in Gaithersburgh, MD, was founded in 1945, and operates today as one of the largest diversified mechanical engineering and contracting services in the Mid-Atlantic region. "We have seen the growth in demand for GEO systems as people embrace the "green movement" and deal with ever increasing utility costs," said Jeff Hottel, president of Harvey W. Hottel, Inc.  "Also helping push the growth are aggressive tax credits, rebates and other incentives offered by Federal and State agencies and utility companies."

Efficient GEO-hvac design utilizes the constant temperature of the ground for transfer of energy through a system of wells. The overall return on geothermal heating and cooling reaches 7.66% (commercial) to 14.04% (residential).  According to experts at Harvey W. Hottel, Inc., these findings have been good news for building owners.  Not just money in owners' pockets but an investment in the future environment.

"Hottel has been my choice for building projects," said Washington D.C. developer Russell Katz.   Katz's project, Franklin Apartments, a 185-unit Section 8 apartment building serving the elderly and people with disabilities in Takoma Park, D.C., transformed a fully occupied 50's era building into an energy-efficient example of best practices in sustainability and design.  And energy costs for occupants are low by comparison to other alternatives.  Franklin Apartments' geothermal system was designed and installed by Harvey W. Hottel, Inc.  Recently, Katz had Hottel install a geothermal system in his private residence and has documented significant savings in heating and cooling costs.

The engineers and skilled professionals at Hottel have designed, installed, and serviced thousands of heating and cooling systems, including over 600 geothermal-hvac systems in Maryland, Virginia, and the District since 1998.  When asked why people are choosing Geothermal, Jeff Hottel said, "Our customers increasingly want to integrate the environment into their buildings and homes and their buildings and homes into the environment.   We assist builders, architects, and home owners on the 'how to's' of creating an efficient building."  Hottel finds that the most efficient mode for building focuses on evaluation of the total energy picture.  Hottel Energy Solutions (a subsidiary) performs energy analysis surveys that help define needs and efficiencies.

As GEO systems are increasingly becoming the norm, government incentives and support have assisted projects.  The State of Maryland ranks high in its support of geothermal-hvac technology.  In this state, almost all schools, new or retrofit, are going georthermal and numerous incentive programs have been a boost to the developing energy market.

EPA studies find geothermal heat pumps help reduce consumption of energy and emissions that traditional heating and air conditioning systems produce by up to 40% (air source heat pumps) and over 70% (electric resistance heating with standard air conditioning systems).  Indicative of this grown in geothermal-hvac, two of the top national environmental concerns are "Carbon Footprint" and "Energy Conservation," according to a recent Gallup poll.   The poll addressed concerns to reduce the negative and improve the positive effect on the environment, including the use of renewable energy resources, such as geothermal heat, and energy conservation.  Hottel's footprint covers hundreds of leading edge commercial and residential geothermal systems for business and home owners in the greater DC area, including a DC Firehouse, the George C Marshall Center in Leesburg Virginia, Maryland's Rio Washingtonian Center, Kentlands Clubhouse, and over a third of Montgomery County Schools.
