Indiana Moms Laud U.S. Rep. Peter Visclosky For Co-Sponsoring Gun Background Check Bill

H.R. 1565 Closes Loopholes on Background Checks for Gun Purchases

INDIANAPOLIS, Feb. 28, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Indiana chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America lauded U.S. Representative Peter Visclosky today for signing on as a co-sponsor to H.R. 1565, a bi-partisan bill that will expand background checks to all commercial firearm purchases made in the United States. Rep. Visclosky joins 187 other congress members that have co-sponsored this bill to date.

"As gun violence continues to plague our nation, it is past time for our lawmakers to come together to enact common-sense solutions that will protect our children and communities from this vicious epidemic," said Julia Chester, Indiana regional manager for Moms Demand Action. "Rep. Visclosky's actions today signal shifting opinion within the chambers of our government that something must be done to prevent senseless shootings. We commend Rep. Visclosky for having the moral courage to put American lives first, before the legislative priorities of the gun lobby."

Since the Brady background check law was enacted 20 years ago today, background checks have prevented over 2 million gun purchases through licensed dealers in the United States. Despite this, loopholes in the system still exist, providing felons, domestic abusers and other dangerous people with opportunities to secure weapons without a background check. An estimated 40 percent of gun transfers take place without a background check, including online and at gun shows.

"H.R. 1565 will close the enormous loopholes that make it easy for dangerous people to get guns while continuing to protect our Second Amendment rights," said Chester. "We hope more of our lawmakers at the federal level will follow Rep. Visclosky's lead, and support this common-sense measure."
