Dell today announced that Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) will deploy more than 8,000 Dell Chromebook 11 laptops to provide each of its 3rd-12th-grade classes with connected devices. OUSD selected Dell’s affordable and easy to manage education solutions to extend equitable access to technology, support personalized learning and meet online testing requirements set by California’s state standards. With Dell’s support, OUSD is leveling the playing field, giving all students access to the opportunity and tools they need for academic success.
“We began this initiative with an ambitious goal – give all students access to a reliable wireless device,” says Dr. Gary Yee, Superintendent, OUSD. “Thanks to the affordability and manageability of Dell Chromebooks, we have been able to realize this vision and give every student, in every school access to a computer. Now, we not only meet the state requirements for online assessment but we are enabling our teachers to personalize learning so students will graduate ready for success in college, career and their communities.”
The district-wide adoption of Dell Chromebooks will ensure that all students have equal access to technology and the Internet, a goal of President Obama’s ConnectED initiative calling for expanding digital learning opportunities. More students will have the opportunity to develop skills using technology and accessing online resources, which are critical to their success as they prepare for higher education and the workplace.
“At Dell, we are committed to achieving the goals of ConnectED by providing school districts across the country affordable, scalable solutions that enable students to personalize their education, prepare for online assessment and access educational content anytime, anywhere,” said Jon Phillips, managing director, worldwide education, Dell. “We are excited to work with the Oakland Unified School District to empower their students with 21st-century learning environments.”
To ensure its students are prepared for the new testing environment required by California state standards, OUSD turned to Dell to develop a turnkey solution that maximized access to digital learning opportunities. Dell Chromebooks are verified to meet Smarter Balanced and PARCC assessment requirements with software from AIR and Pearson Testnav8 and Dell’s team of education experts worked closely with the district to ensure the implementation supported their learning goals.
“Dell took care of all the logistics and really made this a plug-and-play solution. With their expertise, our team is able to get more devices into the hands of our students so they feel prepared to meet Common Core standards,” said Dr. Gary Yee, Superintendent, OUSD, “But our goal is to do more than just give students a new tool to use for testing, we believe the Dell Chromebook opens up a world of resources for a 24/7 learning environment not confined to school walls.”
The 8,000 Chromebooks will be deployed at each of Oakland’s 83 campuses and securely housed in charging carts equipped with access points that extend wireless connectivity to the devices. With Dell Deployment Services, the Chromebooks will arrive at each campus, fully-setup on the OUSD Google Apps for Education domain, asset-tagged to ensure security and laser etched with the OUSD logo. The Dell team will do a complete onsite test of the laptops, including wireless access. The district’s Information Technology Services Department will then remotely manage the devices including pushing updates, pushing or removing applications and enforcing safe-browsing policies.
“We’re excited to see a Bay Area, California leader like Oakland Unified choose Google Apps for Education and Chromebooks to help bring equitable access to information to all of their students,” said Rajen Sheth, director of product management at Google. “Technology is one tool schools have in their arsenal to prepare students for 21st century learning and digital literacy skills, and when a school plans for technology and prepares for its use — as Oakland is doing with Dell and Google — that’s when the largest benefits are realized. Chromebooks are a great choice for students because they are fast, simple, secure and offer long battery life, while IT administrators appreciate the management controls. Everyone wins.”
About Oakland Unified School District
The Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) is the State of California’s most improved urban school district over the past eight years, as measured by Academic Performance Index (API), California’s primary metric for measuring student achievement. During this time, the District’s 46,000 students have benefited from 128 points of API growth and a focus on the whole child embodied by OUSD’s “Community Schools, Thriving Students” vision of a full-service community school district. In this model, every school site offers high levels of learning along with physical health, mental health, dental and eye care; nutrition, physical education, recreation, before-school and afterschool programs; housing, employment, parenting and language acquisition courses and a range of other programs. Social and human services are not seen as extra or add-ons in these schools. Instead, collaboration in service of children and families is how they consistently behave. About Common Core State Standards
All California local education agencies are required to complete a Smart Balanced assessment Field Test between April 7th and May 16th, 2014, for students in grades 3-8 and 11. Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium is a state-led consortium developing assessments aligned to the national Common Core State Standards in English language arts/literacy and mathematics. The consortium issued a Technology Strategy Framework and Testing Device Requirements that provide minimum hardware specifications to ensure districts have adequate infrastructure to support the new Smarter Balanced assessment system. Chromebooks meet all hardware and operating system requirements for the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortia. For more details, visit Dell’s site for Online Assessment.

Scott Jenson leads a project called The Physical Web within the Chrome team at Google. Project members are working to take the scalability and openness of the web and use it to talk to the exponentially exploding range of smart devices. Nearly every company today working on the IoT comes up with the same basic solution: use my server and you'll be fine. But if we really believe there will be trillions of these devices, that just can't scale. We need a system that is open a scalable and by using ...

How do APIs and IoT relate? The answer is not as simple as merely adding an API on top of a dumb device, but rather about understanding the architectural patterns for implementing an IoT fabric. There are typically two or three trends: Exposing the device to a management framework Exposing that management framework to a business centric logic Exposing that business layer and data to end users. This last trend is the IoT stack, which involves a new shift in the separation of what stuff happe...
