North Carolina's Electric Cooperatives Steadily Reduce Outages

RALEIGH, N.C., March 9, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- North Carolina's electric cooperatives' crews have worked tirelessly to restore outages resulting from Friday's winter weather event.  Outages now stand at 12,000 down from a peak of 62,600 on Friday afternoon. The majority of the remaining outages are located in Alamance, Davidson, Durham, Orange and Person Counties, the result of ice and sustained high winds that brought down trees and limbs. The cooperatives appreciate the patience being shown by their members.

Cooperative crews are out in force working to restore electricity as quickly and safely as possible. Dozens of out-of-state crews joined hundreds of line personnel from North Carolina's electric cooperatives to assist co-ops in need with power restoration efforts. The deployment of crews is part of a mutual-aid agreement shared between the nation's nearly 1,000 electric cooperatives to help one another in times of emergency.

If you are still without power and are using a portable generator, be sure the generator is located outside your house for proper ventilation. Do not use a generator in an attached garage. Follow the manufacturer's directions for operating the generator. Remember to never touch a downed power line or do cleanup work from the storm near a downed power line.

A list of outage reporting numbers for each of North Carolina's 26 electric cooperatives can be found at www.ncelectriccooperatives.com/co-ops/coopList.htm

North Carolina's electric cooperatives serve more than 2.5 million people in 93 of the state's 100 counties.
