The Storage magazine-SearchStorage.com “2013 Products of the Year” awards recognize winners in six categories: backup and DR software, backup hardware, storage infrastructure, storage management tools, storage system software and storage systems, and are presented by the editors of TechTarget’s Storage Media Group. The awards were judged by the Storage magazine-SearchStorage.com editorial staff, in conjunction with a team of users, industry experts, analysts and consultants. Judges selected the 16 “Products of the Year” from among enterprise storage-related products introduced, upgraded and shipped after Nov. 1, 2012, and before Oct. 25, 2013.

“By deploying Riverbed Whitewater as part of a cloud strategy, IT teams eliminate wasted days of backing up to tape, as well as the management headaches of physically moving data to and from offsite storage,” said John Martin, senior vice president and general manager of the Storage Delivery Business Unit at Riverbed. “IT departments can now focus on providing higher value to the organization in two ways. First, in the event of disaster or loss of data, recovery of files takes just minutes from the Whitewater appliance, instead of days with tape. And second, companies can reduce costs and risks by de-duplicating traffic, greatly reducing the amount of data sent to and from the cloud, and encrypt the data to ensure it’s secure both in the cloud and in transit.”

Due of the rise of Hadoop, many enterprises are now deploying their first small clusters of 10 to 20 servers. Once the decision has been made to move part or all of a workload to the cloud, a methodology for selecting that workload needs to be established. How do you move to the cloud? What does the discovery, assessment and planning look like? What workloads make sense? Which cloud model makes sense for each workload? What are the considerations for how to select the right cloud model? And how does that fit in with the overall IT transformation?
The recent trends like cloud computing, social, mobile and Internet of Things are forcing enterprises to modernize in order to compete in the competitive globalized markets.
