Physician Seminars Examine Standardization of Patient Care in Mexico via Clinical Decision Support Systems

Wolters Kluwer Health, a leading global provider of information for healthcare professionals and students, hosted a series of seminars for distinguished hospital executives and clinical leaders in Mexico to discuss how using clinical decision support (CDS) systems can improve parity in the quality of patient care. The presentations took place in Mexico City and Guadalajara, and featured Dr. Arturo Pabel Miranda Aguirre, Assistant Sub-director of Teaching and Research at the Centro Médico Nacional “20 de Noviembre” and Dr. Sandy Falk, a Senior Deputy Editor at UpToDate and Clinical Instructor at Harvard Medical School. The regional, invitation-only seminars designed for key healthcare leaders were held from March 3 to March 5, 2014.

“Discussions like these are vital for healthcare leaders in Mexico as they evaluate ways to ensure access to high quality healthcare, no matter where a patient is seen,” said Denise Basow, MD, Vice President/General Manager, UpToDate at Wolters Kluwer Health, Clinical Solutions. “Using resources like UpToDate to aid in decision-making can provide every hospital, clinic and doctor’s office with a virtual team of renowned experts. Clinical Decision Support is an excellent example of how advanced medical technology and clinical expertise can work together to standardize the quality of care.”

In his presentation, Dr. Arturo Pabel Miranda Aguirre discussed strategic and tactical insights gained from his hospital’s successful implementation of UpToDate as their primary resource for clinical decision-making. Dr. Miranda emphasized the value of clinical decision support in equipping today’s clinicians with the most accurate and current information to improve patient care. His hospital’s rapid adoption of UpToDate was due in part to its Spanish interface and comprehensive Spanish search capabilities. Dr. Miranda noted that searching in Spanish saves clinicians time and increases usage of UpToDate overall.

Dr. Sandy Falk, Senior Deputy Editor, Obstetrics/Gynecology and Women’s Health, UpToDate, examined improvements in the quality of patient care using clinical decision support systems. Dr. Falk outlined compelling findings from numerous research studies that demonstrated the positive impact CDS systems make on the care doctors provide to patients. In many cases, doctors who consulted UpToDate for answers often changed treatment and diagnostic decisions to the benefit of patients. The presentation examined how using systems like UpToDate resulted in shorter hospital stays, reduced mortality, and lower costs.

Participants at the seminars included dozens of key decision makers from some of the country’s top hospitals, including doctors from the Instituto Nacional de Cardiología (Mexico City), Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Médicas y Nutrición SZ (Mexico City), Centro Médico ABC Campus Santa Fe (Mexico City), Hospital Ángeles del Carmen (Guadalajara), UMAE Hospital Gineco Obstetricia, Centro Médico de Occidente (Guadalajara), IMSS (in both Mexico City and Guadalajara) and other healthcare organizations.
