GLENDALE, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 03/12/14 -- CARING Housing Ministries, a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization that creates and manages affordable housing communities that serve thousands of people of limited income with exceptional needs, announces its support for the building of Chestnut Homes, a homebuilding project organized by San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity with a groundbreaking ceremony to take place Saturday, March 15.
All 95 CARING Housing Ministries staff members will participate in the year-long homebuilding project. Additionally, the organization will initially contribute $5,000 to the project, as well as participate in fund raising efforts throughout the year for the project. As part of the 'human serving' Front Porch family of companies, CARING Housing Ministries currently manages more than 20 affordable housing communities in California and Arizona, including 12 in the Greater Los Angeles area, for low-income seniors, families with children and those who are physically and mentally disabled.
"CARING Housing Ministries has a rich history in creating, nurturing and preserving quality affordable housing communities that enrich the lives of those who live in them, but we also take great pride in actively serving the community through volunteerism," said Nancy L. Spring, president of CARING Housing Ministries and board member of the Front Porch Social Accountability Council.
CARING Housing Ministries' mission to meet needs beyond those served by typical management agencies is supported by partner Front Porch.
"The heart and soul of any community is found by working together for the common good," said Gary Wheeler, CEO of Front Porch, an innovative not-for-profit organization that recently relocated its headquarters to Glendale. "CARING Housing Ministries' outreach and support of Habitat for Humanity and the building of Chestnut Homes is an excellent example of their belief that 'one CARING person makes a difference.'"
On March 15 at 11 am PT, CARING staff, along with representatives and volunteers from San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity and the eventual homeowners will arrive at the Chestnut Homes building site on East Chestnut Street in Glendale for the groundbreaking ceremony. Spring, along with representatives from Habitat for Humanity and other sponsors will speak at the ceremony before breaking ground.
"San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity is delighted to welcome CARING Housing Ministries as a community sponsor as well as a source for volunteers throughout the entire Chestnut Homes build," said Sonja L. Yates, Executive Director of San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity. "We hope this partnership will be fulfilling and as rewarding to all of those who come on the build site and get to work with families as well as other community volunteers from all walks of life."
In years past, CARING leaders have organized internal staff development programs with funding provided by philanthropic partner, California Lutheran Homes and Community Services, a not-for-profit social ministry organization whose mission is to put faith into action by providing a wide array of services to people in need. Five years ago, the programs evolved externally into community outreach projects, while maintaining their team-building elements.
Working in teams, CARING's community service projects initially spanned up to three months, however in the last few years, they have expanded to six months. The Chestnut Homes homebuilding project will be the first time CARING staff will collectively work together as one team on a single project. It will also mark the organization's first year-long project.
"To succeed and make a difference, you must be compassionate," Spring said. "We go to great lengths in training and developing our staff in order to keep us at the forefront of affordable housing providers, but compassion through volunteerism is the greatest gift you can possibly give."
