SAN ANTONIO, March 13, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Strategy acceleration firm, Compass Intelligence released its latest report on "Buyback & Trade-in Program Market Assessment" today. The report provides a comprehensive assessment of carrier online and in-store trade-in programs for mobile devices. The report differs from previous assessments with the inclusion of retailers such as Best Buy and Target, and recommerce vendors such as Gazelle. The companies assessed in the rankings include:
- Mobile Carriers: Sprint, AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular
- Retailers: Best Buy, Walmart, Target, Apple
- Recommerce Vendors: Gazelle, Amazon, ecoATM
Detailed examination of several levels of information are used to assess the vendors and service providers to offer a ranking based on what is best for the customers, the vendors, the environment, and the industry. Critical components of the ranking include in-store program capabilities, online program capabilities, user feedback and survey information, and market impact and analysis.
"The used device trade-in market has really grown since we started tracking this area three years ago. While the carriers have continually improved their programs and offer periodic promotions, other retailers like Best Buy and Walmart have increased store signage, promotions, and messaging of these in the programs as well." said Kate Pearce, Sr. Consultant and Lead Analyst in the Reuse and Recycling research track at Compass Intelligence.
Compass Intelligence predicts that there will be roughly 396 million idle or inactive mobile devices in the U.S. by the end of 2014. Of those, only about 80 million will be recycled. As such, there is a growing opportunity to re-use or recycle the idle devices in this country.
The end-user research was conducted using Compass Intelligence Thought Leaders Panel, which has a large database of over 3,000 end users and decision-makers in the U.S. For more information about our Thought Leaders Panel, click here.
Highlights from the report:
- 2013 was the year of heavy promotion for trade-in programs
- Both the carriers and retailers are using trade-in promotions as a sales tool thus, we should continue to see increases in the number of phones collected in the future.
- Gazelle held many promotions this year including a contest to giveaway a $1 million. Best Buy also had several promotions in 2013 around trade-ins.
- Most trade-in programs evaluated in this report take back tablets. Apple is the exception.
- Most all of the carriers are associated with a charity for donation. ecoATM and Gazelle are the only non-carriers in this report that have a charity option.

Even though it’s now Microservices Journal, long-time fans of SOA World Magazine can take comfort in the fact that the URL – soa.sys-con.com – remains unchanged. And that’s no mistake, as microservices are really nothing more than a new and improved take on the Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) best practices we struggled to hammer out over the last decade. Skeptics, however, might say that this change is nothing more than an exercise in buzzword-hopping. SOA is passé, and now that people are ...
