Number of lottery mega-jackpots increased drastically in 2013
Bookies have slashed the odds on the world's first billion dollar lottery jackpot after USA Mega Millions broke through the $350 million barrier for the second time in two months.
After achieving a world record lottery jackpot of $656 Million in 2012, USA Mega Millions has maintained its lead over home rival USA Powerball, which hit $590 Million in 2013. Bookies on both sides of the pond are now slashing odds that USA Mega Millions will hit the $1 Billion barrier before the end of 2014 and US state lotteries are said to be nervous that public order could become a problem if the mythical threshold is reached.
"It now seems like we're getting jackpots over $350 million five or six times a year, so at some point the $1 billion barrier will be surpassed," said Lucy Gold, spokesperson for WinTrillions, the world's largest lottery site. "When you think that USA Mega Millions jumped from $340 million to $656 million in just one draw, it's easy to believe that just one more rollover could have done it and USA Mega Millions is looking like the most likely candidate right now."
While the odds of any one person winning a lottery jackpot may be in the tens of millions, the chances of a lotto jackpot rolling over are actually far more favourable. After the extraordinary public reaction to the record USA Mega Millions jackpot, the lottery was restructured in 2013 to make rollovers, and record jackpots even more likely.
"We actually sell more tickets online for each USA Mega Millions draw than Illinois, the only US state that sells lottery tickets on the web," added Lucy. "If the Mega-Rollover run continues, we're more than ready to cope with the unprecedented demand we're expecting."
