Horatio Alger Association Honors Portland Executive and Renowned Philanthropist Peter W. Stott and Two National Scholarship Recipients from Oregon

Mr. Stott and the Scholars are recognized by the Association for their courage, resilience and commitment to higher education

WASHINGTON, March 17, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, Inc., a nonprofit educational organization honoring the achievements of outstanding individuals and encouraging youth to pursue their dreams through higher education, will induct Peter W. Stott, president of Columbia Investments, Ltd. and an Oregon resident as a lifetime Member in April, while also rewarding two deserving Oregon students with its prestigious Horatio Alger National Scholarship. Association Members and Scholars are selected based on their determination to persevere and the success they have achieved despite innumerable adversities.

Named for renowned author Horatio Alger, Jr., who wrote about the merits of hard work, courage, and honesty as the means to success, Horatio Alger Association was established in 1947 to uphold these tenets, which are core to the American Dream. To further its mission, individuals who demonstrate initiative, resilience and excellence in their lives, such as Mr. Stott, are inducted into the Association annually as lifetime Members.

"The Association has chosen Mr. Stott not only for his outstanding professional achievements, but also because of the immense perseverance he has displayed throughout his life," said David Sokol, chairman of Horatio Alger Association. "With less than $100 and a loan from a professor, Mr. Stott began his prolific career as an entrepreneur, and today serves as president of Columbia Investments, Ltd. His determination and unwillingness to let financial circumstances hinder his dream is what makes him so admirable and an invaluable addition to the Association."

Possessing a strong commitment to philanthropy, Horatio Alger Members are celebrating the 30th anniversary of its scholarship programs in 2014. The scholarship programs provide educational assistance to at-risk youth with an admirable commitment to continuing their education and serving their communities. Today, the Association administers one of the nation's largest, privately-funded, need-based scholarship programs in North America, having provided more than $100 million in undergraduate, graduate and specialized scholarships since 1984. The following students from Oregon have been recognized for their exceptional accomplishments with the 2014 Horatio Alger National Scholarship in the amount of $21,000:

  • Enat Arega, De La Salle North Catholic High School, Portland
  • Alekzander Garcia, Nyssa High School, Nyssa

"With the support of the Association, the 2014 scholarship recipients from Oregon are able to continue their journey toward the American dream," said Tony Novelly, president and CEO of Horatio Alger Association. "These outstanding students have faced immense personal obstacles while still maintaining the desire to better themselves through education. Both have demonstrated character and resilience and we look forward to witnessing all they will accomplish in the future."
