HOLLYWOOD, Fla., March 19, 2014 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- By Dixier Mitchell
Florida man Blaine Tucker recently began circulating a pamphlet in Hollywood, Florida in an attempt to raise support for a plastic bag ban in the municipality. The ban would make it illegal for stores to give customers free plastic bags for to carry their purchases, in attempt to encourage the adoption of reusable grocery bags.
According to Blaine Tucker, who founded the Hollywood, Florida group of Earth First, most people he has spoken with support the idea and have pledged their support in seeking anti-plastic bag legislation.
"People here are very aware of their environmental impact," says Blaine Tucker. "I have met very little resistance to the idea during the past few weeks of talking to people and handing out pamphlets. We need to pass some kind of bag ban legislation to get everyone on the same page and force people to use reusable bags instead of wasteful disposable plastic bags."
Tucker cites effective bag ban laws across the United States as inspiration for his efforts to get Hollywood, Florida politicians to consider the ban. Plastic bag bans exist in many cities across the United States, but are most popular in California and Washington.
"It's not something that politicians really need to worry about," says Blaine Tucker. "Prior experiments with banning plastic bags have worked and have paved the way for the rest of the country. People adjust easily to carrying reusable bags, stores save money, and most importantly, we stop polluting the environment with plastic bags."
While Blaine Tucker is optimistic about bag ban legislation, many people oppose such measures because they represent government interference with private business. Opponents of bag bans say that businesses should be able to give bags for free to their customers, especially if it is good for business, and that it is not wise for the government to create obstacles for businesses. Liberty-minded opponents of bag ban legislation denounce efforts to force people to adopt reusable bags, instead of allowing people to make the switch voluntarily.
Blaine Tucker says the his bag ban pamphlet will soon be available online. Currently, Tucker can be found handing out pamphlets in shopping centers throughout Hollywood, Florida. Tucker hopes that bag ban legislation will be brought up in municipal meetings by the end of the year.
