Aeroports de Montreal Recovers its Restaurants' Organic Waste for Composting

MONTREAL, QUEBEC -- (Marketwired) -- 03/19/14 -- Aeroports de Montreal (ADM) is pleased to announce that its project Implantation de la collecte des matieres organiques a l'aeroport Montreal-Trudeau et don de nourriture (establishment of organic waste collection at Montreal-Trudeau airport and donation of food) has been nominated, with two other projects, for an award in the "Enterprises and Institutions" category at the 2014 Gala de reconnaissance en environnement et developpement durable de Montreal (awards recognizing environmental and sustainable development initiatives in Montreal). The winner will be announced on Tuesday, April 29.

Since last fall, restaurants operating at Montreal-Trudeau terminal are now equipped with the facilities they need to recover their organic waste "Following a pilot project that took place during the winter of 2013 in partnership with three restaurants, ADM has invested to equip restaurant operators with waste-recovery bins and has installed a compactor at Montreal-Trudeau to facilitate the collection of organic matter," said Christiane Beaulieu, ADM's Vice-President, Public Affairs and Communications.

Employees of airport maintenance companies and restaurants were given training designed to explain the key aspects of the recovery program introduced at Montreal-Trudeau and to increase the rate of recovery of recyclable and compostable materials.

"ADM is committed to protecting the environment, promoting sustainable development and reducing the environmental impact of its operations. This initiative is part of our environmental policy and will help to increase the waste-recovery rate," Ms. Beaulieu added, noting: "About 50% of the waste generated at the Montreal-Trudeau airport terminal is organic matter."

In addition to participating in the composting program, the terminal's HMSHost restaurants have organized a food donation program for the benefit of Moisson Montreal. Nearly six tonnes of food has been donated to the food bank since the program's introduction.
