Manitoba Premier Greg Selinger presented The Council of Federation Excellence in Water Stewardship Award to Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) on March 18, 2014 at the Manitoba Legislative Building.
The annual award recognizes outstanding achievements, innovative practice and leadership in the area of water stewardship. The award is presented to organizations, partnerships, businesses, institutions, and community groups in each province and territory across Canada.
DUC was recognized for 75 years of dedication to wetland and water stewardship leadership, innovation, collaboration and education in Manitoba.
Since DUC's inception in 1938, it has invested $168 million in wetland conservation efforts and successfully conserved one million acres of wildlife habitat in the province.
From working with landowners to protect small individual wetlands in rural Manitoba to undertaking the restoration of Delta Marsh, one of North America's largest, freshwater coastal wetlands to actively working to protect boreal wetlands in a working forest landscape, DUC is committed to protecting the wetland resources essential for Manitobans' health, wealth and quality of life.
DUC President Mac Dunfield accepted the award on DUC's behalf. "Ducks Unlimited Canada is proud to accept this award, particularly during Canada Water Week. The award is a wonderful acknowledgement of our ongoing commitment as responsible water stewards by protecting our disappearing wetland resources. This provincial and national recognition truly belongs to our volunteers and staff who work hard to promote the benefits of wetland conservation from water quality to wildlife habitat. I congratulate and thank this outstanding team for your efforts!"
Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) is the leader in wetland conservation. A registered charity, DUC partners with government, industry, non-profit organizations and landowners to conserve wetlands that are critical to waterfowl, wildlife and the environment. www.ducks.ca.
