Roku Celebrates Double Win at TV Connect Awards

Roku Inc. celebrated a double win at the industry’s TV Connect Awards 2014, held on Wednesday 19th March at BAFTA, London. The TV Connect Awards recognise the most disruptive innovations around the world each year. Roku Founder and CEO Anthony Wood was presented with the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ for services to the IPTV and connected entertainment industry, while the U.S. based company’s flagship streaming player, Roku® 3, received the award for ‘Best TV Consumer Device’.

Wood was celebrated as a pioneer in the industry having invented the digital video recorder (DVR) in 1998 and for playing a significant part in transforming how consumers watch TV today with the introduction of the first streaming platform for the TV in 2008. Wood is credited as the founder of seven organisations including Roku, ReplayTV and iband.

Wood said: “As a big TV fan myself I’m always thinking about how to make TV better for everyone. I am proud to accept this industry award, and would like to credit the wider team of people who I have worked with over the years for helping me to achieve so much.”

The Roku 3 is the company’s flagship streaming player and launched in the U.K. in September 2013 with its original debut in the U.S. in March 2013. The Roku 3 gives consumers access to the Roku platform with more than 750 channels in the U.K. and Republic of Ireland (1,200 for those in the U.S.), including Netflix, BBC iPlayer, 4OD and YouTube. One of its unique features is that the remote control includes a headphone jack for private listening. Roku topped competition from five companies, including You View and Dune HD, to be awarded the ‘Best Consumer TV Device’.

Roku has sold millions of streaming players across the U.S, Canada, UK and Republic of Ireland. In January the company announced it is working with global TV manufacturers to build Roku TV™, a new generation of Smart TVs. Roku also recently introduced the new Roku® Streaming Stick™ (HDMI™ version), which plugs directly into the HDMI port of the TV, offering the most unobtrusive and comprehensive streaming player on the market. It will be available in April.
