Job-interviewing expert Victoria LoCascio, president of interview advice site AceYourInterview.com, asserts there are numerous techniques that can be employed to obtain the career that youreally want, many of which are overlooked by those actively seeking employment.

"Basically," LoCascio states, "applicants are well versed in the need to prepare for their interview; they know which techniques to utilize to project themselves in the best possible light. However, many people are unaware that they can adopt various other approaches to accelerate their job search."

Ace Your Interview: Some unusual and highly effective approaches

"One of my favorite tactics is taking pro-active to a whole new level," says LoCascio.

According to AceYourInterview.com, this means researching the field to identify 25 to 50 companies that you passionately want to offer you employment.

"For each of these companies," LoCascio continues, "you need to find the name and email of two people: First, a top executive who works in the department in which you want to work, and second, a top executive in the human resources department. Use a spreadsheet to easily keep track of the information." 

She then recommends researching the company as much as possible, taking on a detective role to discover information that you can use to demonstrate why you want to work there.

"That's basically stage one," she states. "Stage two, is making sure that your résumé, cover letter and any social profiles that you have, such as LinkedIn, are flawless." According to Ace Your Interview, your LinkedIn profile must have a minimum of 500 connections and 300 endorsements in the Skills section to appear professional and well connected. Your connections should not be with LinkedIn Open Networkers (LIONs) or with people outside the United States. Implementing the right strategy to ace your interview

"Once all the groundwork is finished," LoCascio continues, "then it is time to start implementing your strategy to secure the interview. Email your cover letter and résumé to every executive on your list, but don't make the same mistake as the majority of applicants by sending a generic cover letter."

LoCascio explains that customized information must be included, such as appropriate contact name and job title, company address, and any additional information relevant to the particular role or company gleaned from prior research.

"Companies love to see that applicants are genuinely interested in their business," she states. "These personalized details show dedication, respect and enthusiasm for the role."

When emailing a cover letter and résumé, it's a good idea, according to Ace Your Interview, to convert files to PDF, which retain formatting and are easily accessed on any system. To save yourself time, stay organized. Work your way through your list, changing the individual's name and company info as you go along, resaving as a new PDF each time. In the body of your emails, paste a non-formatted version of your cover letter and résumé.

Ensuring that you land the interview

"Sometimes, getting what we want in life takes a certain level of courage," LoCascio states firmly. "So don't be afraid of following up your email with a phone call."

Many applicants avoid this stage, due to lack of confidence and reluctance to be seen as 'pestering' the company.
