  1. Do Not Be Caught Off Guard. In other words, do your research. Most people know to research the company they are interviewing for, and possibly even the specific position, but many don't think to research those who will be interviewing them. Looking up information about interviewers on LinkedIn and through the company website is a best practice. And the information found can be a great conversation starter.
  2. Do Not Dominate the Conversation. An interview is supposed to be a dialogue, not a monologue. And, in that same vein, always come prepared with questions. The right job is about a good fit, not just for the company, but also for the employee.
  3. Do Not "Badmouth" Your Previous Employers. The workforce is smaller than people realize – especially within the same industry – and you might not realize whom the interviewer may know at other companies. If asked in an interview why you left the company, be diplomatic and factual.

  • Being too humble. It is best practice in an interview to talk about what you have done individually rather than "we" did this or "the team" completed that.
  • Not sending a follow-up email or card thanking the interviewer for their time.
  • Making it very clear during the interview that you are interested in the position.
  • Having a weak handshake.
  • Discussing salary in the first interview (unless it is brought up by the employer).
  • Coming unprepared. Know what you are required to bring with you, such as samples of work.
