Three Things Not To Do In A Job Interview

Latest Unemployment Statistics Show Continued Tough Competition for Open Positions

NEW YORK, March 20, 2014 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- With the latest figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reporting 10.5 million Americans being out of work - and new reports claiming that the actual unemployment and underemployment number could be up to 10 million higher than the BLS figures – there is no question that competition is stiff for new jobs.

"At this point we had all hoped to see a more positive employment outlook for Americans, but the reality of the situation is that the open job market remains extremely competitive," said Jamie Freundlich, CEO of LiveCareer. "So, we at LiveCareer continue to do everything we can to help job-hunters be prepared – whether that's with our resume builder, our LiveCareer resume review process, or our helpful interview tips."

In its continuing effort to help job seekers land their dream career, LiveCareer North America has surveyed its network of career counselors, human resource professionals and recruiters to determine the Top 3 Things Not To Do In A Job Interview.

  1. Do Not Be Caught Off Guard. In other words, do your research. Most people know to research the company they are interviewing for, and possibly even the specific position, but many don't think to research those who will be interviewing them. Looking up information about interviewers on LinkedIn and through the company website is a best practice. And the information found can be a great conversation starter.
  2. Do Not Dominate the Conversation. An interview is supposed to be a dialogue, not a monologue. And, in that same vein, always come prepared with questions. The right job is about a good fit, not just for the company, but also for the employee.
  3. Do Not "Badmouth" Your Previous Employers. The workforce is smaller than people realize – especially within the same industry – and you might not realize whom the interviewer may know at other companies. If asked in an interview why you left the company, be diplomatic and factual.

Other commonly mentioned mistakes noted by LiveCareer's professional network include:

  • Being too humble. It is best practice in an interview to talk about what you have done individually rather than "we" did this or "the team" completed that.
  • Not sending a follow-up email or card thanking the interviewer for their time.
  • Making it very clear during the interview that you are interested in the position.
  • Having a weak handshake.
  • Discussing salary in the first interview (unless it is brought up by the employer).
  • Coming unprepared. Know what you are required to bring with you, such as samples of work.

According to a poll conducted by Right Management and reported by the Wall Street Journal, more than 80 percent of employees surveyed in North America reported that they plan to actively look for new work in 2014. With this in mind, a successful interview and a standout resume are crucial to landing the job.
