SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwired - March 20, 2014) - Common Sense Media, the national nonprofit helping kids and families thrive in the digital age, has partnered with LAUSD for the successful launch of the district's first Digital Citizenship Week. Since Monday, every student in every Los Angeles public school has been learning about safely and responsibly engaging in the vast online world through lessons from Common Sense Media's K-12 Digital Literacy and Citizenship curriculum.
"In today's digital world, kids are tested with each post, search, chat, text message, file download, and profile update," said James Steyer, CEO and founder of Common Sense Media. "We applaud our partners in Los Angeles Unified School District for supporting this initiative to prepare their students to maximize the potential of technology for learning."
LAUSD teachers have been accessing a comprehensive Common Sense Media toolkit with grade-appropriate lesson plans, activities that can be implemented schoolwide, and materials to engage parents, guardians, and communities about digital citizenship.
The district-wide initiative kicked off with a special event at Western Avenue Elementary School on Friday, March 14. City and district dignitaries, including leadership from the LAUSD Common Core Technology Project (CCTP) team; Thelma Melendez, the director of education and workforce development for the City of Los Angeles; Sylvia Rousseau, LAUSD board member (District 1: South and Southwest LA); and LAUSD Superintendent John E. Deasy visited the school where students have been using iPads in their classrooms since last fall.
"Our students are entering a digital world. Knowing how to use powerful technology, and being safe while doing so, is fundamental for their future. This is why digital citizenship is so important to us. We are preparing our students to be the best they can be," said Deasy. "As we proceed into Phase II of our Common Core Technology Project, and as we begin to adopt new standards intended to help our students achieve, Digital Citizenship Week represents measurable advancements in our efforts to bring true 21st-century teaching and learning practices into every classroom across the District."
LAUSD held three other special events across the district and will continue to provide targeted resources for schools throughout the year. To learn more about LAUSD's Digital Citizenship Week, please visit http://lausd.schoolwires.net/dcw.

The Internet of Things is tied together with a thin strand that is known as time. Coincidentally, at the core of nearly all data analytics is a timestamp. When working with time series data there are a few core principles that everyone should consider, especially across datasets where time is the common boundary. In his session at Internet of @ThingsExpo, Jim Scott, Director of Enterprise Strategy & Architecture at MapR Technologies, discussed single-value, geo-spatial, and log time series dat...

There's Big Data, then there's really Big Data from the Internet of Things. IoT is evolving to include many data possibilities like new types of event, log and network data. The volumes are enormous, generating tens of billions of logs per day, which raise data challenges. Early IoT deployments are relying heavily on both the cloud and managed service providers to navigate these challenges. In her session at Big Data Expo®, Hannah Smalltree, Director at Treasure Data, discussed how IoT, Big D...

WebRTC defines no default signaling protocol, causing fragmentation between WebRTC silos. SIP and XMPP provide possibilities, but come with considerable complexity and are not designed for use in a web environment. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Matthew Hodgson, technical co-founder of the Matrix.org, discussed how Matrix is a new non-profit Open Source Project that defines both a new HTTP-based standard for VoIP & IM signaling and provides reference implementations.

Scott Jenson leads a project called The Physical Web within the Chrome team at Google. Project members are working to take the scalability and openness of the web and use it to talk to the exponentially exploding range of smart devices. Nearly every company today working on the IoT comes up with the same basic solution: use my server and you'll be fine. But if we really believe there will be trillions of these devices, that just can't scale. We need a system that is open a scalable and by using ...

What do a firewall and a fortress have in common? They are no longer strong enough to protect the valuables housed inside. Like the walls of an old fortress, the cracks in the firewall are allowing the bad guys to slip in - unannounced and unnoticed. By the time these thieves get in, the damage is already done and the network is already compromised. Intellectual property is easily slipped out the back door leaving no trace of forced entry. If we want to reign in on these cybercriminals, it's hig...
