Top 32 Canadian Athletes Carve Out Spots in Red Bull Crashed Ice Elimination Round

National Shootout Narrows the Competition Before Saturday's 2014 World Championship Finals in Quebec City

QUEBEC CITY, QC--(Marketwired - March 21, 2014) - The 2014 Ice Cross Downhill World Championship season finale kicked off in Quebec City tonight with the National Shootout, pitting more than 100 Canadian male and 28 female athletes against each other as they fought to earn a spot in the World Finals on Saturday, March 22, 2014.

Heavy snow fell all day in Quebec, making the already gruelling 480-m track even more difficult for athletes to navigate tonight. A crop of 45 rookie male athletes took to the ice for the first time, including Brayden Jones from Paris, ON who tackled the track in the fastest time. The women's Qualifying race also took place tonight, narrowing 28 fearless female athletes down to the lucky 16 that will skate in Saturday's finals. Fastest time in the female bracket tonight went to Jacqueline Legere, also from Paris, ON.

Event Format

In the National Shootout, athletes each get two chances to skate the track, top-to-bottom, against the clock. Fastest time counts as the top 32 Canadian athletes advance to tomorrow's Elimination Round. Tomorrow will bring a new onslaught of races, including the International Shootout, Elimination Round and Team Competition. This will further narrow the competition for Saturday's Ice Cross Downhill World Championship final race.

The 2014 Ice Cross Downhill World Championship

The only sport of its kind and arguably the fastest sport on skates, the Ice Cross Downhill World Championship has returned to Quebec City for its ninth consecutive event this week. Over a series of elimination rounds, heats of athletes from across Canada and around the world race down an enormous urban ice track that swerves through the streets of Quebec City, chock-full of new obstacles that includes a first-ever 3-m ice gap.

World Champions are crowed through the points they rack up at each stop; points are up for grabs at every international stop and the 'Ice Cross Downhill World Champion' is the competitor who has accumulated the most points over the course of the season.

Since the first race in 2000 in Stockholm, Red Bull Crashed Ice has touched down in over 30 countries around the world and the sport's popularity continues to explode. The competition reached new heights in 2013, drawing over 300,000 spectators internationally over the course of five World Championship races last year alone.
