TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 03/21/14 -- Star Navigation Systems Group Ltd. (TSX VENTURE: SNA) ("Star" or the "Company") wishes to extend its sincere condolences to the families of those apparently lost on MH370.
Any loss of an airliner and those aboard is tragic. In this instance, the pain being experienced by those left behind must be compounded by the fact that they have had to endure uncertainty for over two weeks. From Star's point of view, as a company whose business is the real time monitoring of aircraft, it is regrettable that the lessons learned at great cost from the AF-447 incident have not been applied in the 5 years since AF 447 was lost. Star participated in the Working Group established by the BEA (the French Transportation Safety Board) to look into the technical aspects of that incident and specifically, the Triggered Transmission of Flight Data automatically in an emergency situation, especially over maritime or remote areas.
The BEA Report recommended, amongst other things, that:
"EASA and ICAO make mandatory as quickly as possible, for aeroplanes making public transport flights with passengers over maritime or remote areas, triggering of data transmission to facilitate localization as soon as an emergency situation is detected on board."
The proven technology exists today to meet this and other recommendations of the BEA Report. For instance, the STAR-A.D.S. system precisely allows ground personnel to have complete position and situational awareness of the flight. This system automatically provides extensive, real time data through global satellite communications. Details respecting various systems and sub systems on board are monitored and analyzed. In the context of MH 370, the system also provides location information and, in case of emergency, a stream of information commencing 30 seconds before the emergency and continuing for as long as the system remains intact.
Had the recommendations of the BEA Investigation been implemented and the system installed on MH 370, the authorities would have a much better awareness of what transpired on board MH 370, and where it was lost.
