Health Minister Rona Ambrose met with the Advisory Council on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to discuss TCM products available in Canada. She was joined by Dr. Colin Carrie, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of the Environment.
Items on the meeting agenda included recent TCM initiatives, an overview of veterinary TCM products, and TCM products imported and marketed as foods (for example, beverages containing ginseng and/or other TCM herbs).
The Advisory Council was established in January 2012 to provide the Minister of Health with advice on a range of new and emerging issues related to TCM use in Canada. It has also supported Health Canada in the development of a monograph of TCM ingredients that provides guidance to industry on product licence applications and labelling.
-- Health Canada provides oversight of TCM products under the Natural Health Products Regulations, to help assure that they are safe, effective and of high quality. -- The Advisory Council provides advice to the Minister on TCM-related issues, including the importation, sale and use of TCM products in Canada; the practice of TCM in Canada (noting that this is subject to provincial jurisdiction); and novel TCM products. -- More than 3,000 TCM products are currently authorized for sale in Canada.
"As more Canadians choose Traditional Chinese Medicine, our need to know more about these products grows. I appreciate that we are able to benefit from the knowledge and experience of our Advisory Council members."
Rona Ambrose Minister of Health
"This is my third meeting with the Advisory Council. I am pleased to be building on previous discussions and continuing to learn more about TCM products, practice and philosophy - which ultimately helps us make sure Canadians have access to a wide range of safe and high-quality TCM products."
Dr. Colin Carrie Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of the Environment
