Sun Peaks Resort and its Signature Hotel Announce Next Exciting Phase of Growth

Delta Sun Peaks Resort becomes "Sun Peaks Grand" in May

SUN PEAKS, BRITISH COLUMBIA -- (Marketwired) -- 03/25/14 -- Sun Peaks Resort, already one of the largest mountain resorts in Canada, is about to become the second largest ski area in the country - and its signature hotel is taking on a whole new identity as part of that next phase of growth.

The Delta Sun Peaks Resort will become "Sun Peaks Grand Hotel & Conference Centre" as of May 1st, a name chosen to reflect the hotel's superb guest facilities, amenities and services and its landmark position within the resort village.

The existing ownership, management personnel and employees of the luxury hotel remain in place, and are committed to continuous improvements including a refurbishment program that has already begun at the 12 year old hotel.

In addition to the hotel name change, and a move to locally-based management, Sun Peaks Resort Corporation is announcing the next steps in the resort's development master plan, which includes additional trails for both winter and summer outdoor adventures. Work starts this spring on new trails in the West Morrisey and Gil's area. Skiable terrain will grow to 4,200 acres for the 2014/2015 winter season. This larger trail network will tie Sun Peaks Resort with Lake Louise in terms of area, making Sun Peaks one of the three largest mountain resorts in Canada.

To date, Delta Hotels and Resorts has been responsible for operating both the hotel, and more recently the adjacent Delta Residences at Sun Peaks, under a management agreement with the hotel's developer and owner SP Hotel Corporation, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sun Peaks Resort Corporation.

With the current management contract set to end on April 30th, both Sun Peaks Resort and Delta Hotels and Resorts have agreed to wind up their joint agreement.

With Sun Peaks Grand to be managed by a locally-based company as of May 1st, there is also the opportunity to seamlessly integrate future hotel plans with Sun Peaks Resort's next phase of development, as outlined in its approved master plan.

In support of the resort's next phase of development, Sun Peaks Grand will work closely with Tourism Sun Peaks and Sun Peaks Mountain Resort Municipality to promote the popularity and ongoing growth of the resort as a whole.

Management and staff at the hotel were informed today of the change.

"This is a tremendous opportunity for us to manage and operate the resort's signature hotel locally and better integrate it into our ongoing development and resort operations," explained Darcy Alexander, Vice President and General Manager of Sun Peaks Resort.

"There is no change in ownership and we're delighted that the same team of people who've made the hotel what it is today will remain with us. Their experience and expertise will be invaluable in taking the hotel forward as a key component of the overall development plans for Sun Peaks Resort."

"Our efforts to tell the world about us are clearly paying off, and knowing we have continuity at our signature hotel is important," says Christopher Nicolson, President of Tourism Sun Peaks. "All of the people who work and live here will be pleased with the commitment from Sun Peaks Grand to not only stay the course, but improve the hotel and commit to making Sun Peaks the premiere mountain destination experience in Canada. This commitment benefits everyone in our village."

From small beginnings 50 years ago, Sun Peaks Resort has grown significantly, especially in the past two decades after being purchased by Nippon Cable in 1992. Today, Sun Peaks is recognized by Conde Nast, Snowboard Canada Magazine and Canadian Living as the second best mountain resort in the country.

"Our growing international reputation as one of Canada's best mountain resorts, as well as the ongoing development of our residential community, makes our resort municipality a great place to visit, work and invest in," added Al Raine, Mayor of Sun Peaks Mountain Resort Municipality. "We're really pleased to see the ongoing commitment of Sun Peaks Resort Corporation that will see Sun Peaks Grand continue as our community's premier property."

"Sun Peaks has emerged as one of Canada's must-ski resorts, and knowing that we're building on our considerable success with local management and ownership of the Grand, as well as new runs, is an important signal to everyone, both here at Sun Peaks and in key visitor markets, that we're adding even more value to our resort guests' experience," said Nancy Greene, Director of Skiing at Sun Peaks.
