Harper Government Supports Initiative Aimed at Attracting Foreign Investment to Winnipeg

WINNIPEG, MANITOBA -- (Marketwired) -- 03/28/14 -- Western Economic Diversification Canada

Today the Honourable Michelle Rempel, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification announced $170,000 in support to Economic Development Winnipeg to attract international investment to Winnipeg through the YES! Winnipeg initiative.

WD's funding is expected to generate $125 million in business attraction leads from January 1, 2014 to December 31, 2015 which could result in $25 million in Foreign Direct Investment in Winnipeg.

Economic Development Winnipeg is a non-profit economic development organization. It launched YES! Winnipeg in partnership with the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce to increase business activity and economic spin-offs by attracting Foreign Direct Investment to the city.

--  The YES! Winnipeg initiative will build on Manitoba's business capacity
    in agricultural crop and animal processing; niche goods and beverage
    manufacturing; agri-equipment manufacturing; transportation products and
    technology; and clean technologies.
--  The project will focus its direct investment attraction activities by
    promoting Winnipeg to US site selectors and by targeting companies and
    industry sector markets in China, Europe and India.
--  This project is directly aligned with the Government of Canada's Global
    Commerce Strategy as it links with fast-growing emerging markets such as
    China and India and also targets the European Union.
