EXPERT ALERTS:

Infection Control and Cleaning
Mark Searcy
Divisional Business Development Manager
Coverall Health-Based Cleaning System
"Employees are notorious for coming to work even though they're sick. The most common way people get sick is through the spread of infection; objects and surfaces like keyboards, counter tops, door handles that are not cleaned properly. Germs can linger on surfaces depending on the pathogen and can live at room temperature anywhere from a few hours to a few weeks. The public can take precautions by learning proper hand hygiene (hand washing) and cover their mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing with a tissue or handkerchief, or into their elbow to prevent infecting others."
With more than 26 years of environmental services training experience, Searcy offers vast expertise in cleaning techniques, green cleaning, cleaning of healthcare facilities and other comprehensive industry knowledge.

New Non-Invasive DNA Colon Cancer Screening Test
Arun Swaminath, M.D.
Director of Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Lenox Hill Hospital
"Colon cancer is the third most common cancer and will affect 5 in 100 people over their lifetime. A newly devised stool test (Cologuard) tests for both blood and changes to DNA that are commonly found in patients with colon cancers. This new combination of blood and DNA was able to identify 60 out of 65 patients diagnosed with cancer by colonoscopy (an excellent 92 percent sensitivity of the test).  A positive DNA test might mean that there is a polyp or cancer that can be identified by a direct test such as colonoscopy. However, in 5-10 percent, the DNA stool test was positive, but the colonoscopy did not find any polyps or cancers.  This may be an excellent tool for those patients who are reluctant to participate in colonoscopy screening programs, to see if they might be at higher risk for the development of colon cancer and then decide on more direct methods of testing."
Dr. Swaminath is a gastroenterologist and director of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. His areas of expertise include colorectal cancer screening and prevention, imaging of the small bowel, capsule endoscopy and emerging medical therapies for the treatment of IBD.

Debate Around the Use of Dietary Supplements
Elizabeth Somer, RD
Nutritionist and Author
"No reputable health experts will argue that supplements can or should replace a good diet and a healthy lifestyle. However, multivitamins and nutritional supplements are one factor in a pattern of living that is known to maintain overall wellbeing. Think of multivitamins as an insurance policy for optimal nutrition – they're meant to supplement, not replace, a healthy diet."
Somer is one of the most trusted sources of nutritional information whose work has helped millions achieve their ideal health through proper nutrition and lifestyle changes. She is a frequent quest on national television, including Today Show, The View, and Dr. Oz, and has conducted hundreds of national and regional radio talk shows and local television interviews. Her books include "Eat Your Way to Sexy," "Eat Your Way to Happiness," "Food & Mood," "Age-Proof Your Body," "Nutrition for Women" and "The Essential Guide to Vitamins & Minerals." She is an expert on all things nutrition and is especially interested in the recent debate around the use of dietary supplements.

Preventing Memory Loss
Majid Fotuhi, M.D., Ph.D.

"Memory is like a muscle: Use it or lose it. You can dramatically prevent memory loss by being physically active and trying new things, memorizing long lists, and taking DHA memory supplements the have been shown to increase blood flow to the brain, enhance memory, and prevent Alzheimer's."
Dr. Fotuhi is considered one of the world's foremost brain experts and an authority on memory and aging. His clinical research at Johns Hopkins focuses on finding effective ways to prevent memory loss and Alzheimer's disease. He has also conducted research on the basic biochemistry of communication among brain cells, and his results have contributed to the development of new drugs aimed at treating stroke and Alzheimer's disease. He recently wrote a book called Boost Your Brain, which provides medical evidence that cognitive decline later in life is not predetermined.
