Toshiba Launches Fiber Optic Transmission Modules with Low Power Consumption

Toshiba Corporation (TOKYO:6502) today announced new additions to its line-up of “TOSLINK™” fiber optic transmission modules that has a data rate of direct current (DC) to 10Mb/s for distances up to 100m using APF (all plastic fiber) and with low power consumption. Mass production is scheduled from the beginning of April.

Utilizing an original high-power, high-reliability red LED allows the new products to be driven at a lower current than existing products[1]. Transmission distance of 40m to 100m can be achieved with a 6mA drive current, and distances of 0.2m to 50m with a 1.5mA drive current. This is 90% lower than for existing products[1]. Also, the optic receiving module uses a single-chip light sensor IC, which contains a photodiode, an amplifier and a waveform-shaping circuit (automatic threshold control circuit (ATC)) and operates at 20mA (max.).

Four new products will be available in horizontal-type and vertical type packages: horizontal-type optical transmitting and receiving modules, TOTX1350(F) and TORX1350(F); and vertical-type optical transmitting and receiving modules, TOTX1350(V,F) and TORX1350(V,F).

Use of the optical transmission modules in industrial devices, control devices, wind and photovoltaic power generation systems and amusement machines will contribute to the realization of high speed, long distance and low consumption current optical communications that conserve energy.
