Applications Now Being Accepted By The Chicago School Of Professional Psychology For Master Of Public Health Programs In Summer and Fall 2014

Free Webinars Offered During National Public Health Week

LOS ANGELES, April 2, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Following on the heels of the successful launch of its first Master of Public Health Program online, The Chicago School of Professional Psychology (TCSPP)—the leading nonprofit national graduate school devoted exclusively to psychology and related behavioral and health sciences, is now accepting applications for its summer online M.P.H. Program, as well as its fall on-ground M.P.H Program at its Los Angeles Campus located in the downtown area. The program is specifically designed for working adults interested in making a difference in the health and wellness of others through the promotion of community and public health. Students also have the ability to deepen an area of interest through the selection of courses from electives in three areas: Global Health, Psycho-Behavioral Dimensions of Public Health, and Public Health Leadership. Students can choose to focus in one of those three areas or they can decide to take electives from all of those areas.

First-time student Vernita Platt, who is currently enrolled in the M.P.H. Online Program, had this to say about why she chose The Chicago School: "I really was looking for a graduate program that supported active participation and service in the community. The TCSPP staff has been open and encourages conversation that has created a sense of community. I want to use what I learn to be a better advocate in the community and a promoter of healthier life choices. I'm very interested in focusing on the leadership aspect of the M.P.H., so that I can be better prepared to one day create and monitor programs in my community."

The 42-credit degree, consisting of a core of 27 credits, six credits of field work and capstone, and nine credits of an emphasis area is built of the standards of the Council on Education for Public Health (CePH), with the curriculum based on the competency model published by the Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH).

Webinar: Overview of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Free Education Resources

Topics: Learn about free nutrition, women's health, medication safety, and food safety publications available from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use in community health education programs. Get an overview of hot topics in nutrition and additional online resources available for public health professionals.

Webinar: Psychology and Public Health - The Intersection of Wellness

Topic: A bridge is being built between psychology's focus on individual well-being and Public Health's interest in wellness at the population level. Psychologists possess unique skill sets that enable them to identify interactions between behaviors and environmental factors that are relevant to the individual and society at large. Examples range from risk factors for illness and injury to patterns of crime. Psychologists have both opportunity and obligation to play a role in prevention, intervention, and recovery in the Public Health domain.

Webinar:   Reviewing Programs and Standards of Care for Refugees with Disabilities and
Chronic Illness

Topic:  This presentation will focus on unique situation of newly arrived refugees who are navigating the United States health care system for the first time.  Refugees arrive with little previous knowledge of the health care system and how to access care, as well as linguistic, cultural, and financial barriers.  The presentation will review programs for refugees with disabilities and chronic illnesses who are resettled in the Chicago area, as well as the current procedures and the results from an exploratory study of the Medical Case Management program at one of five resettlement agencies in Chicago.
