State of Cloud Adoption

RightScale has recently published a report on State of the Cloud Report. It is the result of a survey of about a thousand people.
The report has seven conclusions in the executive summary:

  1. Cloud aRightScale Cloud Report - 2014doption reaches ubiquity
  2. Hybrid cloud is the approach of choice
  3. Enterprise cloud governance lags adoption
  4. The challenge of cloud security is abating
  5. Next-generation IT shapes up as Cloud + DevOps + Self-Service IT
  6. Amazon Web Services (AWS) continues to dominate public cloud adoption
  7. The battle among private cloud technologies is shaping up as a clash of cultures

I don’t think that there are any surprises in these conclusions.

However, when I examined the report in more detail I could draw 3 interesting conclusions which … well you can judge if they are surprising:

Public cloud is winning over Private cloud

Though Hybrid cloud is the king as 54% of the respondent have gone hybrid, what is interesting to note that “Public cloud only” has 4 times the adoption compared to ”Private cloud only” – 29% to 7%

I don’t find it surprising because one of the key premise of cloud is that you do not have to bother about the infrastructure. Why should anybody build their own data center? It is like building your own power plant.

Cloud security risk is more of a perception than a real challenge

How can I come to such a conclusion?

It is simple.

Security is the top concern of the cloud “Beginners” - with 31% votes.

However, for the cloud “Focused” organization who are already using cloud heavily – security comes way down on the 5th position – with only 13% votes.

Also, the security concerns among the focused organizations have come down from about 20% last year year to 13% this year!

IT is losing out

There is a large gap between how IT perceives their role in the cloud vs. how business units (BU) perceives the role of IT in the cloud. Have a look at the following stats:

  • Broker Cloud Services – should IT have a role? - Only 18% respondents from the BU think so.
  • Should IT set policies for how cloud should be used? - There is a large gap of 26% between what BU think (34%) and what IT think (60%).
  • Should IT select Private cloud? - There is even a larger gap of 29% between what BU think (38%) and what IT think (69%).
  • Should IT select Public cloud? - Even here there is large gap of 18% between what BU think (42%) and what IT think (60%).

The surprising part in this is that BU want more help in selecting public cloud compared to private cloud. It does not make any sense to me.

I would very much like to look at this data separately for cloud beginners and cloud focused organizations – that will tell us if there is hope for IT or not.

If the gap in cloud focused organizations is less then we can conclude that there is hope for IT!

However, if the gap is more then IT is doomed!

While a hybrid cloud can ease that transition, designing and deploy that hybrid cloud still offers challenges for organizations concerned about lack of available cloud skillsets within their organization. Managed service providers offer a unique opportunity to fill those gaps and get organizations of all sizes on a hybrid cloud that meets their comfort level, while delivering enhanced benefits for cost, efficiency, agility, mobility, and elasticity.

DevOps has long focused on reinventing the SDLC (e.g. with CI/CD, ARA, pipeline automation etc.), while reinvention of IT Ops has lagged. However, new approaches like Site Reliability Engineering, Observability, Containerization, Operations Analytics, and ML/AI are driving a resurgence of IT Ops. In this session our expert panel will focus on how these new ideas are [putting the Ops back in DevOps orbringing modern IT Ops to DevOps].

Enterprises are striving to become digital businesses for differentiated innovation and customer-centricity. Traditionally, they focused on digitizing processes and paper workflow. To be a disruptor and compete against new players, they need to gain insight into business data and innovate at scale. Cloud and cognitive technologies can help them leverage hidden data in SAP/ERP systems to fuel their businesses to accelerate digital transformation success.
Most organizations are awash today in data and IT systems, yet they're still struggling mightily to use these invaluable assets to meet the rising demand for new digital solutions and customer experiences that drive innovation and growth. What's lacking are potent and effective ways to rapidly combine together on-premises IT and the numerous commercial clouds that the average organization has in place today into effective new business solutions.
Concerns about security, downtime and latency, budgets, and general unfamiliarity with cloud technologies continue to create hesitation for many organizations that truly need to be developing a cloud strategy. Hybrid cloud solutions are helping to elevate those concerns by enabling the combination or orchestration of two or more platforms, including on-premise infrastructure, private clouds and/or third-party, public cloud services. This gives organizations more comfort to begin their digital tr...
Keeping an application running at scale can be a daunting task. When do you need to add more capacity? Larger databases? Additional servers? These questions get harder as the complexity of your application grows. Microservice based architectures and cloud-based dynamic infrastructures are technologies that help you keep your application running with high availability, even during times of extreme scaling. But real cloud success, at scale, requires much more than a basic lift-and-shift migrati...

Tom Chavez presents the four steps that quality engineers should include in every test plan for apps that produce log output or other machine data. Learn the ste...
Digital Transformation is much more than a buzzword. The radical shift to digital mechanisms for almost every process is evident across all industries and verticals.
