The European CyberKnife Center Munich is celebrating its 5,000th patient treatment using the CyberKnife® System

SUNNYVALE, Calif., April 7, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Accuray Incorporated (Nasdaq: ARAY) announced today that the European CyberKnife Center Munich-Grosshadern (ECZM) has performed 5,000 CyberKnife® treatments since June 2005. The center uses a CyberKnife M6™ System from the latest generation series, the most advanced robotic radiosurgery system in the world. Patients of the center benefit from a treatment option that offers enhanced stereotactic radiosurgery/stereotactic body radiation therapy (SRS/SBRT): tumors are treated non-invasively with precisely delivered high doses of radiation.

The European CyberKnife Center, in partnership with the University Hospital of Munich-Großhadern, offers almost 10 years of experience with this state-of-the-art technology. "The treatment with the CyberKnife System offers a number of benefits compared to surgery: no anesthesia, no pain and minimal side effects," explains Prof. Alexander Muacevic, who founded the treatment center together with his colleague Prof. Berndt Wowra in 2005. The CyberKnife System is used for tumors anywhere in the body. The CyberKnife System features a compact linear accelerator mounted on a robotic arm. It is the only system that automatically adjusts the beam delivery to motion during treatment in real-time. This precision is essential to deliver high doses to the target area while simultaneously minimizing radiation exposure to surrounding healthy tissue and organs. The CyberKnife M6 System can deliver non-coplanar, non-isocentric beams from a wider number of angles around the patient, with the ability to follow tumors in real-time throughout the treatment. This provides clinicians the confidence to reduce margins for every disease that is treatable with the CyberKnife System.
