Monotype Imaging Holdings Inc. (Nasdaq: TYPE), a leading provider of typefaces, technology and expertise for creative applications and consumer devices, has introduced the 36-font Burlingame® typeface family by Carl Crossgrove, senior type designer at Monotype. The square, sans-serif design is suitable for a wide range of purposes, from branding, advertising and packaging to automotive displays, user interfaces, motion graphics, and mobile and broadcast environments.

Crossgrove worked primarily on screen as he developed the family, intent on ensuring its effectiveness in digital environments. Wide apertures, loose spacing and angled cuts help to provide crispness and clarity at any text size. “The design’s generous spacing and general openness are in response to providing high legibility in automotive displays, where legibility is especially critical,” said Crossgrove. “The shapes are solid, yet simple, and project strength.”
In 2012, Monotype together with The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) AgeLab and the New England University Transportation Center conducted an exploratory study that showed that humanist type styles can play a role in minimizing glance time – the time away from watching the road when driving while interacting with in-vehicle displays.
The Burlingame typeface, which was initially intended for video games, was modified based on findings of the study. Humanist attributes – such as open forms and highly distinguishable shapes – were integrated within the design to aid legibility.
The Burlingame family is comprised of nine weights in two widths, from ultra thin to extra black, in regular proportions and as condensed designs. Each has an italic counterpart for a total of 36 fonts. The family is available as OpenType® Pro fonts, which provide for the ability to easily insert typographic features such as ligatures, fractions and alternate characters. Pro fonts also offer an extended character set to support most Central European and many Eastern European languages. The Burlingame typeface may be licensed as either desktop fonts or Web fonts from www.myfonts.com, www.fonts.com or www.linotype.com. All subscribers to Fonts.com Web Fonts paid plans have access to the new fonts as Web fonts, while Pro and Master subscribers can also use the family as desktop fonts as part of their subscription.
An introductory promotion is available through May 8, 2014 when licensing the entire Burlingame family of desktop fonts. Until then, customers are able to receive 50 percent off the regular price of $399.99 when licensing the Burlingame family from www.myfonts.com, www.fonts.com or www.linotype.com.
