OMG Working Group Demonstrates Interchange between 15 BPMN Tools

The Object Management Group® (OMG®) is pleased to announce that its Business Process Model and Notation Model Interchange Working Group (BPMN MIWG) has successfully demonstrated the smooth interchange of models between tools that implement the BPMN standard. Participants in the demonstration were dispersed between OMG’s technical meeting in Reston, VA, the bpmNEXT conference in California, France, and Poland.

A total of 15 tools were involved in the demonstration: 12 tools creating a common model in real time and three tools opening the resulting model. The entire demonstration was filmed via Google Hangouts and is available on-demand at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tf7ktcnV3OQ#t=406.

“This demonstration proves to the BPM community that BPMN is delivering on its promises by showcasing leading 12 BPMN vendors implementing the BPMN interchange format,” said Denis Gagne, Chair of BPMN MIWG and CEO/CTO of Trisotech. “Don’t get misled, real BPMN tools can interchange using the BPMN standard file format.”

“The BPMN interoperability demo conducted by the MIWG at bpmNEXT was an eye-opener for those who have underestimated the importance of standard adoption,” said Laurent Heneault, CEO of W4 Software, one of the participating vendors in the demonstration. “It opens up new horizons in terms of collaborative process design, showing how business process stakeholders can reuse existing models to boost productivity and to offer reusable solution components. Process execution platforms then become the perfect extension tool to provide end-users with a clear, end-to-end understanding of the underlying behaviors and semantics meant by the standard.”

BPMN provides a graphical notation and precise model for specifying business processes. It has been an OMG-adopted standard since 2005. BPMN MIWG held its first successful interchange demonstration at OMG’s June 2013 technical meeting. The group plans to hold another demonstration but has not set a date yet. Celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2014, the Object Management Group® (OMG®) is an international, open membership, not-for-profit technology standards consortium. OMG Task Forces develop enterprise integration standards for a wide range of technologies and an even wider range of industries. OMG’s modeling standards enable powerful visual design, execution and maintenance of software and other processes. Visit www.omg.org for more information.

The major cloud platforms defy a simple, side-by-side analysis. Each of the major IaaS public-cloud platforms offers their own unique strengths and functionality. When you set off to build an app that will change the world, designing your system architecture to be reliable and scalable is important but the stark reality is that, for your MVP, you probably had a “need for speed” (of development).
