CLEVELAND, April 15, 2014 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- An enduring tradition, man's relationship with beer dates back nearly 7,000 years. And while few human traditions can rival the ancient art of brewing, MISCO has taken a big step forward today in advancing brewing science with the first ever digital refractometer designed specifically for the brewing industry.
The patent pending MISCO Digital Beer Refractometer is not just another repurposed Brix refractometer. MISCO Pro-Brewing Scales™ are scientifically derived from a beer model with a complex sugar profile, influenced strongly by maltose, and specific to wort. As there is very little sucrose in wort, measurements and temperature compensation are naturally much more accurate than sucrose-based Brix refractometers. Furthermore, because the refractometer is made specifically for beer, the user no longer needs to use a refractometer correction factor when plugging dissolved solids readings into beer calculators.
To accommodate brewers from different regions of the world who desire to measure beer with their own preferred units of measure, MISCO has created a variety of beer scales from which to choose. The user may select up to five scales which include Total Dissolved Solids (sugars), Brix, °Plato, Specific Gravity, Brewer's Points, Balling, and even Ethanol Content. A Scale for Propylene Glycol freezepoint can also be added to the instrument for measuring wort cooler antifreeze or chiller systems. Refractometer output can even be localized to display in English, German, Spanish, French, and Russian.
"The MISCO Digital Beer Refractometer is the first refractometer designed specifically for the professional brewer," said Michael Caminer, MISCO's Director of Marketing. "It is a significant contribution to brewing science that will provide fast, accurate measurements for large-scale brewing operations, as well as craft-brewers, and even the high-end home brewer."
Fast, convenient, and easy to use, the MISCO Digital Beer Refractometer requires only a fraction of the sample size required by traditional hydrometers. Simply place a drop or two of wort in the stainless steel well and press a button. The beer refractometer delivers a nearly instantaneous digital readout on a large backlit LCD display. The digital readout removes the subjectivity associated with interpreting where a boundary line crosses tiny little scale divisions.
Precision is assured thanks to MISCO's proven OPTICAL-ENGINE®, which is at the heart of every Digital Beer Refractometer. Optical-Engine technology featuring high-precision sapphire optics, the next hardest substance to diamond, improves the speed and accuracy of temperature measurements. Competing digital refractometers use only glass prisms. A 1,024 element high-definition detector array provides more than eight times the resolution of competing 128 element low-definition detector arrays. The MISCO array has more than 3,256 pixels per inch (ppi) resolution compared with 400 ppi resolution in competing digital refractometers. The net result is an instrument that is more rugged and more precise.
Nonlinear temperature compensation is specific to beer, not sucrose, and automatically ensures that fluids read between 10 and 40 °C (50 to 104 °F) are measured accurately. Calibration is automatic and does not require the use of special calibration solutions or tools. The beer refractometer automatically calibrates itself to water and is ready to use in seconds. No more screws to turn and nothing to adjust.
A world leader in the refractometer field, MISCO is headquartered in Cleveland, OH, home to the company for 65 years. MISCO designs, manufactures, and sells a variety of refractometers, including: digital bench-top laboratory refractometers, inline process control refractometers, digital handheld refractometers, and traditional handheld instruments.
