WILTON MANORS, Fla., April 21, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Thanks to the City of Wilton Manors, parking on the north end of Wilton Drive is about to get more plentiful.
On Tuesday, April 22 at 6 p.m., officials will cut the ribbon on the City's new 42-space parking lot, located at the corner of Northeast 26 Street and Northeast 8 Terrace off of Wilton Drive.
"The new municipal lot will provide much-needed parking on the north side of Wilton Drive. The Manor, Galangas, Starbucks, Rosie's Bar & Grill and other nearby businesses will benefit from the new spaces," said Mayor Gary Resnick.
Continuing, the Mayor said, "Wilton Manors has become more popular than anyone could have imagined - particularly the Drive at night. This new parking lot, in addition to all the parking we've added in the past several years, will make it easier for those who choose to drive to find parking. But we're not finished. With the funds left in the money we borrowed in 2011 we will look at possibly buying other lots near Wilton Drive in an effort to continue to add more parking spaces."
The parking lot was purchased and developed using a portion of the $1.1 million the City Commission borrowed in 2011 to address parking problems along Wilton Drive. It was developed by combining three separate parcels. Two were formerly single-family homes and are owned by the City. The third, was leased by the City from Kids In Distress which has its main campus located across the street from the municipal lot. Per the agreement with Kids In Distress, the City has the option to buy the third parcel in the future.
When opened, motorists who park in the lot will have to add money to the meters between 6 p.m. and 3 a.m. The lot will be monitored by the contracted parking agency, Lanier Parking. Revenues from the parking program will assist in repaying the loan funds used to construct the lot.
