CAMPBELL, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 04/22/14 -- Exalt Communications, Inc., the leading innovator of next-generation wireless connectivity systems for private networks and Internet infrastructures, today announced that the Canaveral Port Authority in Cape Canaveral, Florida has deployed Exalt ExtremeAir all-outdoor microwave systems to provide redundant connectivity for critical network infrastructure.
Port Canaveral is Brevard County's deep-water port, housing both cargo and cruise ship terminals. The Port uses fiber optic cabling to link its various facilities, and its network carries everything from ship movement data to video surveillance. However, ongoing construction in the area can result in fiber cuts when backhoes trench in the wrong place. By deploying Exalt microwave backhaul systems as a redundant connectivity option, the Port ensures that network will stay connected during fiber cuts. While the Port had experience with other brands of microwave systems in the past, it selected Exalt systems because Exalt provided superior service and performance.
"We needed a microwave network that would always be available in the event of a fiber cut, and Exalt provided the best product for the job," said Mark Lorusso, senior director of IT for the Canaveral Port Authority. "We like that we can increase our link throughput with license key upgrades, and Exalt's service has been outstanding."
Another plus for Exalt systems is that they are entirely made in the USA. The microwave systems were deployed through a federal Port Security Grant, and the terms of the grand stipulated that the microwave systems be made or assembled in the USA. "Other systems we looked at were assembled in the USA and would have qualified, but they couldn't match the service and performance of Exalt," Lorusso added.
Exalt partner FM Associates of Jupiter, Florida provided and installed the Exalt systems at Port Canaveral. Throughout its network, the Port Canaveral Authority uses 18 Exalt ExtremeAir systems in the 18 GHz and 23 GHz frequency bands. Network capacity on the microwave network was initially 400 megabits per second (Mbps), but it has been upgraded to between 620 Mbps and 1 Gigabit per second, depending on the specific link.
