Imprisoned in Egypt, Sarah Attia's husband needs help: Khaled Al-Qazzaz is facing deteriorating health and needs the Canadian government's help

QUEEN'S PARK, April 24, 2014 /CNW/ - A Canadian woman whose husband has been falsely imprisoned in Egypt continues to raise awareness about his inadequate care and deteriorating health. Sarah Attia is urging Minister Baird to do more to help bring justice to her husband and family while he is unlawfully imprisoned in Egypt.

Khaled Al-Qazzaz, a permanent resident of Canada and father of four young Canadian children, has been unlawfully detained in Egypt for 296 days. He has done nothing wrong and has not been charged with a crime. Khaled currently spends his days and nights in solitary confinement under the worst possible conditions in one of Egypt's most notorious prisons. He has also been denied access to legal counsel and medical aid, and has no regular contact with the outside world; worse is that his health is deteriorating.

Mississauga-born Sarah Attia has been tirelessly fighting for justice and freedom for her husband, but now she worries that his health is in jeopardy and he needs urgent attention, "Khaled and I met while we were students at the University of Toronto. We were very active in promoting equality and human rights during our University days and ever since. It's a true tragedy that Khaled has been denied his human rights while standing up for democratic values that he holds so close," said Ms. Attia.

Sarah and Khaled's children, also Canadian citizens, have been devastated since Khaled was torn from their family last summer. They are urging the federal government, through foreign affairs minister, the Honourable John Baird, to do more to help Khaled.

Sarah, along with family, friends and a growing group of supporters are holding a rally in support of Khaled on Saturday, April 26 at Toronto's Yonge-Dundas Square. Further information about the rally can be found at
