OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 04/24/14 -- About 2,300 trade unionists will gather at the Palais des Congres de Montreal from May 5 to 9 for the 27th constitutional convention of the Canadian Labour Congress. The convention occurs every three years and the 2014 theme is "Together Fairness Works".
Delegate registration begins at 12 Noon on Sunday, May 4. Opening ceremonies occur at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, May 5 and include a First Nations welcome, greetings from Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre and from the Quebec Federation of Labour. CLC president Ken Georgetti will address the convention at 10:50 a.m. on that day.
Delegates will debate resolutions regarding the workforce of the future, education, skills and training, the Temporary Foreign Workers Program, health care, child care, trade agreements and retirement security. There will be a panel on creating a better tomorrow in Canada, and another on how to promote the union advantage to everyone. An International Solidarity forum will discuss corporate accountability in the aftermath of the Bangladesh factory collapse in 2013.
Special guests include Sharan Burrow, general secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation; Dr. Cindy Blackstock, executive director of the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society of Canada; journalist and author Susan Delacourt; Frank Graves, president of Ekos Research; and Dr. Laurie Waridel, the Quebec-based founder of Equiterre, an organization dedicated to promoting ecologically and socially viable choices;
