AIS’s Design for HMI Manufacturability Services Meet Electrical Product Safety UL and CSA Standards for Workplace Safety in Measurement, Control, and Laboratory Use

An open platform, PC-based, Industrial PC (IPC), touch panel interfaces and manufacturing solutions provider, American Industrial Systems, Inc. (AIS), announces their Design for Manufacturability Services (DMS) for the development of Human Machine Interface (HMI) systems conforming to UL 61010-1, UL 61010-2-201, and CAN/CSA-C22.2 NO. 61010-1-12 safety standards. These harmonized standards specifically encompass requirements for “EN 61010 Safety Requirements for Electrical Equipment for Measurement, Control and Laboratory” use.

UL and CAN/CSA electrical codes and standards have been necessary requirements for achieving the highest levels of electrical product safety for workers in a vast range of electronics equipment testing, measurement and control, and laboratory equipment environments. Product quality, reliability, user safety and liability issues are always key considerations that AIS DMS group addresses throughout the development, engineering and manufacturing process. Electrical safety measures and compliance to these codes are paramount for customers to gain access and opportunities in applications and environments requiring machinery and equipment with integrated control and monitoring solutions. To this end, AIS continuously strives to improve its DMS capabilities and service offering by incorporating new testing for standards and certifications that not only make future designs and manufactured open HMI solutions for customers more advanced, but adhere to the most stringent electrical product safety requirements.

AIS Applies Proper Electrical Safety Methodology and Testing to the Design of their Open Platform HMIs and Industrial Touchscreen PCs throughout All Stages of Development

To design, engineer and manufacture open HMI solutions that are electrically safe by UL and CAN/CSA standards, AIS’s DMS team understands they must address all the hazards that exist for use in their intended areas of operation. As per the aforementioned standards for electrical product safety for measurement, control and laboratory environments, the hazards must be evaluated during design, engineering and manufacturing stages. There are four fundamental hazards to consider and include testing for: electrical shock, mechanical/physical injury, low voltage/high energy and fire.

As a leader in DMS, the electrical/electronic control equipment team at AIS is always developing new tests and procedures to undertake testing, certification and approval for new standards that help customers sell their products for use in new markets, applications and environments. In order to accomplish these objectives, AIS implements many test phases during the development process. Design tests are performed on a sample of HMI products during the initial design stage. Results of these tests must be available in a file for inspection. In addition to testing during initial design stages, routine production tests are also required. Production tests are typically a subset of the design tests that usually include dielectric strength (hipot) and ground bond or ground continuity tests.

Testing for New Standards and Certifications is Just One Important Component of AIS’s In-House Turnkey Design for Manufacturability Services Capabilities

In addition to standards and certifications testing, AIS offers a comprehensive in-house, turnkey approach for customers’ new product development. Their full suite of DMS capabilities include: engineering services, management services, design and manufacturing and quality control. AIS promotes standardization of material, facilities, and engineering practices for the purpose of improving measurement, control, and laboratory safety standards, regulations, operational readiness and to reduce total cost of ownership. Industry standards state requirements in performance terms in order to make maximum use of technologies, products, and practices. AIS engineers manage design tools and methods; deliver intelligence, techniques and data to drive innovation for efficient designs that are manufacture-able.

AIS Designs Meet UL 61010-1 Safety Requirements for Electrical Equipment for Measurement, Control, and Laboratory Use - Part 1: General Requirements - Edition 3 - Issue Date 2012/05/11

AIS HMIs and PC-based control and monitoring solutions meet electrical safety specification and requirements as per IEC 61010 code which specifies general safety requirements for electrical equipment intended for professional, industrial process, and educational use; any of which may incorporate computing devices, when used under the normal and extended environmental conditions. AIS Design for Manufacturability Services test and certify open Industrial PCs and HMI solutions to perform within the following equipment:

  • Electrical Test and Measurement Equipment: This is equipment which by electromagnetic means tests, measures, indicates or records one or more electrical or physical quantities, also non-measuring equipment such as signal generators, measurement standards, power supplies for laboratory use, transducers, transmitters, etc. This standard also applies to test equipment integrated into manufacturing processes and intended for testing manufactured devices.
  • Electrical Control Equipment: This is equipment which controls one or more output quantities to specific values, with each value determined by manual setting, by local or remote programming, or by one or more input variables.
  • Electrical Laboratory Equipment: This is equipment which measures, indicates monitors or analyzes substances; or is used to prepare materials, and includes in vitro diagnostic (IVD) equipment. This equipment may also be used in areas other than laboratories, for example self-test IVD equipment may be used in the home and inspection equipment to be used to check people or material during transportation.

AIS designs and manufacturers control, monitoring and visualization solutions to meet both normal and extended environmental conditions for safe operation measurement, control and laboratory operations. For indoor and outdoor use, these standards allow for temperatures of 5 °C to 40 °C, along with specified requirements for altitude, maximum relative humidity, mains supply voltage fluctuations, transient overvoltage and applicable rated pollution degree.

AIS Tests & Certifies their Open Platform, Control & Monitoring Equipment to Meet UL 61010-2-201 Standard For Safety Requirements for Electrical Equipment for Measurement, Control, And Laboratory Use - Part 2-201: Particular Requirements for Control Equipment - Edition 1 - Issue Date 2014/01/24

AIS Design for Manufacturability Services comply with IEC 61010, which specifies safety requirements and related verification tests specifically for control and monitoring equipment of the following types: Programmable controllers (PLC and PAC); the components of Distributed Control Systems (DCS); the components of remote I/O - systems; industrial PC (computers) and Programming and Debugging Tools (PADTs); Human-Machine Interfaces (HMI); any product performing the function of control equipment and/or their associated peripherals, which have as their intended use the control and command of machines, automated manufacturing and industrial processes, e.g. discrete and continuous control.

AIS Industrial PCs and Touchscreens Comply with CAN/CSA-C22.2 NO. 61010-1-12 Safety Requirements for Electrical Equipment for Measurement, Control, and Laboratory Use- Part 1: General Requirements - Edition 3 - Issue Date 2012/05/01

This is the harmonized CSA, ISA, and UL standard for electrical equipment for measurement, control, and laboratory use. It is the third edition of CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 61010-1, the third edition of ANSI/ISA-61010-1 (82.02.01), and the third edition of UL 61010-1. This edition of CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 61010-1 supersedes the previous edition published as CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 61010-1 in 2004. This edition of ANSI/ISA-61010-1 (82.02.01) supersedes the previous edition of ISA-82.02.01 published in 2004. This edition of UL 61010-1 will supersede the second edition of UL 61010-1 published in 2004. This standard has been approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) as an American National Standard.

The basic integration architecture, as defined by ESBs, hasn’t changed for more than a decade. Most cloud integration providers still rely on an ESB architecture and their proprietary connectors. As a result, enterprise integration projects suffer from constraints of availability and reliability of these connectors that are not re-usable across other integration vendors. However, the rapid adoption of APIs and almost ubiquitous availability of APIs amongst most SaaS and Cloud applications are ra...

But what about C/C++ and COBOL apps, which continue to be mission-critical for enterprises? Do you bring such apps to the cloud? If so, what are the options for transitioning to cloud? Or would you rather leave such apps on-premises, possibly in a private cloud, and only worry about integrating these applications with new applications in the cloud?
