With the internationally-benchmarked Common Core academic standards being widely adopted across the United States, Capella University has announced the addition of four content emphases to its MS in Education K-12 Studies in Education specialization (http://bit.ly/CapellaK12Studies). The emphases—Standards-Based Math, Science, Social Studies, and English Language Arts—incorporate the national Common Core State Standards developed by education leaders across the country. Capella University (http://www.capella.edu) is a regionally accredited online university* that offers online degree programs designed to help working adults advance in their careers.
The development of Common Core State Standards is a national initiative sponsored by the Council of Chief State School Officers and the National Governors Association. The process also included significant input from teachers, parents, administrators, and other concerned citizens and was benchmarked against international best practices in education. The Common Core is designed to standardize K-12 learning and proficiency expectations across the country to ensure that all students graduate from high school prepared for college and careers. Currently, 44 states, the District of Columbia, four territories, and the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) have voluntarily adopted the Common Core State Standards and are in the process of implementing them.
“We regularly review our programs to ensure that they are meeting the needs and expectations of today’s educators, the students they teach, and the schools that employ them,” said Feranda Williamson, EdD, dean of Capella’s School of Education. “We consider the Common Core State Standards among the most relevant issues in K-12 education today and we felt it was important to augment our K-12 Studies in Education master’s program to prepare educators to teach this content.”
