Virgin Pulse Expands Fast-Growing Family of Compatible Wearable Fitness Devices and Apps, Adds Endomondo and Misfit

Virgin Pulse, the market leader in the rapidly-growing employee health engagement category, today added a new wearable fitness device and mobile app to the suite of those integrated with its platform. The company added Endomondo, a popular social fitness network and mobile tracking app that turns smartphones into a personal trainer and social motivator, and Shine from Misfit, the elegant, all-metal activity tracker that you can wear anywhere.

Virgin Pulse is the first corporate wellness provider to directly integrate with Misfit’s Shine, a sleek activity and sleep monitoring device that allows for infinite customizability via a selection of stylish accessories and doesn’t require charging. Virgin Pulse supports a wide array of the industry’s leading wearable fitness devices and mobile apps, including solutions from Fitbit, MyFitnessPal, Polar, RunKeeper via their Health Graph API, as well as its own Max device and Pulse Mobile App. With MyFitnessPal and RunKeeper themselves integrating with dozens of devices, Virgin Pulse already has entry into a broad ecosystem of wearables and apps from the world’s top manufacturers, beyond these existing integrations.

Technology is disrupting corporate wellness—for all the right reasons. No longer just the shiny objects utilized by early adopters or fitness enthusiasts, wearable devices and apps are important tools to help improve employee health and engagement. Just as BYOD (“bring your own device”) has allowed employees to use the technology device—tablet, smartphone or laptop—of their choice, the “consumerization” of office technology has extended to the employee wellness market. Employees want to use the devices and apps they want to use; and studies have shown that more than half of consumers are aware of wearable fitness devices, and one in three are likely to buy one on their own.1

Studies also show that individuals who utilize wearable fitness devices or apps lead more active lifestyles—and pursuing a fitness goal while wearing one can increase the effectiveness of reaching fitness goals by more than 20 percent2. With these numbers in mind, Virgin Pulse is committed to providing its end-users with the broadest range of choices in devices and apps in support of their efforts to make healthy behavior changes that help them get the energy, focus, and drive they’ll need to be able to engage at work and in their lives.

“Wearable fitness technology can have a dramatic impact on helping change behaviors and nudge people along. And that’s what modern wellness is all about—changing behaviors and engaging people to live better,” said Chris Boyce, Virgin Pulse’s CEO. “Incorporating wearable fitness tech as part of a workplace wellness program helps employers reach not just the worried well but the majority of the population—the people who aren’t taking it upon themselves to investigate these devices and aren’t willing to pay a lot for them on their own. With those factors in mind, we’ll continue to add even more of the best wearable fitness devices and mobile apps to our growing suite of compatible devices in order to provide even more consumer choice and to continue delivering the great consumer experience for which the Virgin brand is known. We’re excited to welcome Endomondo and Misfit’s Shine to our family of compatible wearable fitness devices and apps.”

Mette Lykke, Endomondo’s CEO & Co-Founder, said, “Endomondo prides itself on being fun, social and motivating. With tens of millions of users around the globe, we also believe in the power of community—involving family and friends in the process of getting healthy. Our integration with Virgin Pulse is a logical extension of our core tenets, and we’re excited to bring our application to Virgin Pulse’s corporate customers and their employees.”

"Corporate wellness programs are an incredible opportunity to affect healthy change at scale, and nothing is cooler than that," said Misfit CEO & Founder Sonny Vu. "We’re excited to partner with Virgin Pulse to bring Shine to even more employees across the country."

Beyond the latest wearable fitness devices and mobile apps, Virgin Pulse has also extended its platform to integrate with the National Independent Health Club Association (NIHCA). This new partnership provides Virgin Pulse clients with yet another way to incentivize physical activity and healthy lifestyles, such as reimbursing employees for health club membership fees or offering rewards for health club visits.
