Host Analytics Saves Former Oracle-Hyperion Users $100M USD

Oracle Begins to React as Large-Scale Migration to Cloud-Based EPM Delivers Huge Benefits to Big Enterprises

REDWOOD CITY, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 04/29/14 -- Host Analytics, the leader in cloud-based Enterprise Performance Management (EPM), today announced that former Hyperion customers who have moved to cloud-based EPM from Host Analytics are saving more than $100 million by migrating off of Hyperion. The savings estimate is based on customer-provided data, industry analyst estimates, and internal TCO estimates, and assumes a 5-year lifecycle that is typical for on-premises EPM applications.

When choosing EPM solutions, many organizations only consider the up-front costs of software licenses as well as training and implementation services. However, they initially overlook the significant ongoing ownership costs associated with on-premises alternatives.

Those costs are driven by numerous factors including:

  • Complex scripting and customization
  • Administrative support staff in the form of IT staff, Finance department admins, or outside consultants
  • Implementing major feature upgrades
  • Applying software patches
  • Data center operating costs including facilities, power, cooling and disaster recovery
  • Hardware costs for development, test/training, production, and backup environments
  • Internal help desk support
  • Incremental storage as data volumes grow
  • Software maintenance fees
  • Ongoing performance tuning

Especially in larger organizations with sophisticated needs and bigger user populations, these costs add up quickly, creating a strong financial incentive to explore alternatives. This is also why leading organizations like Earthlink, Quicklogic, Sanmina, SkyHawke Technologies, Wind River Holdings, Zep, and many others have migrated to EPM in the Cloud with Host Analytics. In fact, customers of Host Analytics who switched from Oracle-Hyperion have average annual revenues of nearly $6B USD. One very large organization's own internal model projected more than $9M in incremental total ownership costs to stay with Hyperion for another 4 years, mostly driven by the consulting expense of complex, disruptive, on-premises software upgrades.

"Today, finance departments are challenged to play a more strategic role in their company. This means shifting the focus from executing rote tasks to providing greater analytical and forward-looking support to other areas of the organization," said Rob Kugel, Senior Vice President and Research Director at Ventana Research. "Cloud computing is gaining increasing acceptance from finance professionals because it can offer faster time-to-value and have a total lower cost of ownership compared to an on-premises alternative."

Even Oracle has publicly recognized this trend, stating that "In conversations with CFOs, some of the reasons they cite in favor of cloud-based finance systems include the resource allocation flexibility that comes with avoiding large upfront investments, the ability to avoid fixed capital investments during periods of corporate or economic uncertainty, and timely access to the latest software capabilities."(1)

Organizations aren't turning to Host Analytics Cloud EPM Suite for cost savings alone. They frequently cite the application's ability to handle their complex accounting and financial needs as well as the increased business agility and flexibility made possible by Host Analytics' cloud-based delivery model. Oracle has also recognized the improved adoption and collaboration offered by cloud-based EPM applications, stating that "Gaining the input and intelligence of line of business managers becomes much more feasible with a cloud-based model that can be easily and flexibly rolled out across the organization."(1)

"Pretty much everyone -- now even including Oracle -- has recognized that EPM buyers increasingly prefer the Cloud," said Dave Kellogg, CEO at Host Analytics. "Those buyers are turning to Host Analytics to get the same or better robust EPM functionality they love, but at a fraction of the cost of traditional on-premises EPM systems like Hyperion. What's more, when turning to Host Analytics they get both a true multi-tenant Cloud architecture that maximizes agility as well as a true Cloud business model that aligns vendor and customer interests."

Even though it’s now Microservices Journal, long-time fans of SOA World Magazine can take comfort in the fact that the URL – soa.sys-con.com – remains unchanged. And that’s no mistake, as microservices are really nothing more than a new and improved take on the Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) best practices we struggled to hammer out over the last decade. Skeptics, however, might say that this change is nothing more than an exercise in buzzword-hopping. SOA is passé, and now that people are ...
