EMERYVILLE, CA--(Marketwired - April 29, 2014) - Through a rare "people-to-people" permit granted to Mountain Travel Sobek by the U.S. government, guests are now able to travel legally to Cuba directly from the U.S.
Three departures have been scheduled to learn about Cuba's rich history through visits like La Finca Vijia, Ernest Hemingway's private estate; as well as experience modern Cuba by exploring the vibrant artist communities in La Havana and the lush agricultural heartland of Las Terrazas -- both UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
MTS star guide, Sergio Fitch-Watkins, has taken yearly visits to Cuba and will lead each departure with a unique perspective, focusing on a true experience with the country's people to understand Cuba as it stands today.
Venture into the scent-infused tobacco fields of Viñales where locals have developed a model of reforestation and community living that continues strong since the 1960's; meet a group of artists that transformed a worn-down laundromat into a contemporary artist studio; discuss the intricacies of Cuba's education system with administrators while visiting a local school; and taste the classic sofrito flavors of Cuban food at local restaurants, while getting to know the cooks who create them.
Some other highlights include:
- Visit to Francisco Donatien Cigar Factory where factory workers detail the history and the manufacturing process of this iconic Cuban trade.
- Walk along the picturesque Malecón while browsing the local artisan market.
- Enjoy lunch at a local farmhouse in rural Viñales before discovering the Cuevas del Indio, one of the most impressive limestone caves in the valley.
- Learn how medical services are handled in rural Cuba by stepping into the small Clinica Las Terrazas, which provides everything from homeopathic remedies, dental care, and even haircuts.
Each day will be a new look into a different local perspective with the goal of understanding the Cuba's roots as well as its emerging culture. The Cuba Cultural Discovery trip is 9 days and departs from Miami, FL. Each departure is limited to only 16 guests to ensure an intimate experience.
The available departures for Cuba Cultural Discovery are as follows:
- November 8-16, 2014
- December 6-14, 2014
- February 7-15, 2015
