Jossey-Bass/Wiley to Publish Field Guide on Blended Learning

Schools are approaching the tipping point of a digital transformation that will change the way the world learns. How can we channel the indisputable surge of online learning into a positive force that makes life better for students and teachers? How can leaders unlock the benefits and mitigate the risks? Blended: A Field Guide to Disrupting Class, (Jossey-Bass/Wiley, November 2014), co-authored by Michael B. Horn and Heather Staker of the Clayton Christensen Institute for Disruptive Innovation, will answer these questions and serve as a trusted resource and eye-opener for the builders of the next generation of K-12 learning environments.

"Blended learning is a key element in the march toward personalized learning," said Staker. "The vast majority of students taking part in online learning are doing so through a blend of online learning and brick-and-mortar school experiences. The world needs educators who understand how to deliver this new model's full potential."

The first formal follow-up to the popular Disrupting Class (which Horn co-authored with Harvard Business School Professor Clayton Christensen), Blended looks at the changes taking place in education through the lens of time-tested theories of innovation.

“Our aim is to transform monolithic, factory-model education systems into student-centered learning,” said Horn. “In Blended, we provide practical guidance to help educators harness the potential of online learning and apply it in a way that creates a personalized learning experience for each individual student.”

Co-founder and executive director of education at the Institute, Horn leads a team of researchers who work with community leaders and policymakers to better utilize the power of disruptive innovation in the K-12 and higher education spheres. Author of the pivotal study “The rise of K-12 blended learning,” Staker is a senior research fellow at the Institute and an influential voice in the national dialogue on education reform.
