Dexter + Chaney, providers of Spectrum® Construction Software for the construction industry, announced Scott Builders, Inc., a general contractor from Red Deer, Alberta, Canada, as the winner of the Innovator Award at its 18th annual Connect 2014 Users’ Conference held April 24 –25 at the Fairmont Olympic and W Hotels in downtown Seattle.
“We are very pleased to receive the 2014 Innovator Award from Dexter + Chaney,” said Murray Cunningham, Scott Builders’ chief operating officer. “The advanced cloud-based technology of their Spectrum construction software is an important part of our plans for continued growth.”
The Innovator Award, sponsored by Dexter + Chaney, annually recognizes the innovative uses of software and technology by contractors that allow them to take their company’s success to the next level. Formed in 1971, Scott Builders has become a leader in the commercial, industrial and institutional low-rise construction markets. After looking at multiple software options, Scott Builders chose to use Spectrum because of its ability to accommodate the needs of a Canadian contractor.
Scott Builders was selected as the winner of the Innovator Award because of its effective use of Spectrum’s full functionality of business management applications. Chiefly, Spectrum’s web-based platform and mobile applications allowed Scott Builders to access data anytime, anywhere in order to bridge the data gap between the field and office. Prior to Spectrum, Scott Builders had been using a variety of separate software packages and applications to try and meet business management demands. By using Spectrum, Scott Builders was able to consolidate accounting, project management and operations tasks within one software package.
“We’re pleased to announce Scott Builders as the winner of the 2014 Innovator Award,” said John Chaney, Dexter + Chaney’s co-founder and CEO. “Scott Builders is making full use of Spectrum’s advanced technology, design, and functionality. It is exciting to see how Spectrum is helping them increase efficiency and close the information gap between the field and office.”
Interstate Electrical Services Corporation from North Billerica, Massachusetts and Baldwin Paving Co., Inc. from Marietta, Georgia were also honored at the conference as finalists for the Innovator Award.
The Connect 2014 Users’ Conference brought together more than 400 Spectrum customers, industry partners and experts for three days of learning and networking functions, including an evening of entertainment at the world-renowned Seattle Aquarium. Eight unique tracks featuring 56 different courses were available for attendees, covering the latest industry trends and best practices as well as detailed sessions on software functionality. Keynote speeches included a presentation from Lt. Col. Rob “Waldo” Waldman — a combat decorated F-16 pilot and award-winning speaker — and John Chaney, who closed the conference with a glimpse of some of the future technology developments in the works at Dexter + Chaney.

How do APIs and IoT relate? The answer is not as simple as merely adding an API on top of a dumb device, but rather about understanding the architectural patterns for implementing an IoT fabric. There are typically two or three trends: Exposing the device to a management framework Exposing that management framework to a business centric logic Exposing that business layer and data to end users. This last trend is the IoT stack, which involves a new shift in the separation of what stuff happe...

With a business context in the decision making, the right business priorities are incorporated, which results in a higher value creation. In his session at DevOps Summit, Todd Rader, Solutions Architect at AppDynamics, discussed key monitoring techniques...

What do a firewall and a fortress have in common? They are no longer strong enough to protect the valuables housed inside. Like the walls of an old fortress, the cracks in the firewall are allowing the bad guys to slip in - unannounced and unnoticed. By the time these thieves get in, the damage is already done and the network is already compromised. Intellectual property is easily slipped out the back door leaving no trace of forced entry. If we want to reign in on these cybercriminals, it's hig...

We are reaching the end of the beginning with WebRTC, and real systems using this technology have begun to appear. One challenge that faces every WebRTC deployment (in some form or another) is identity management. For example, if you have an existing service – possibly built on a variety of different PaaS/SaaS offerings – and you want to add real-time communications you are faced with a challenge relating to user management, authentication, authorization, and validation. Service providers will w...
