Mobile Health Comes of Age: Voxiva Enrolls Over 1 Million Users in Digital Health Programs

Voxiva, Inc., a leader in digital health, announced today that more than 1 million users have enrolled in their evidence-based behavior change programs. Voxiva’s services leverage mobile phones to promote maternal & child health (Text4baby and Text4kids), adult health & wellness (Txt4health), smoking cessation (Text2quit) and diabetes self-management (Care4life).

One way in which Voxiva has been able to achieve such a high volume of users is through relationships with channel partners. Alere Wellbeing offers Text2quit through telephone counseling services they provide for state quit lines, the American Diabetes Association offers Care4life as part of its Living with Type 2 Diabetes program, and many health plans, including Amerigroup and UnitedHealthcare, offer Voxiva’s wellness services to their members.

Voxiva’s programs are also extensively studied by independent researchers. “We have had more than a dozen independent studies of our programs,” said Justin Sims, CEO of Voxiva. “In a randomized trial by George Washington University (GW) of our smoking cessation program, they found that biochemically confirmed abstinence was more than twice that of the control group. In another GW study, they found that Text4baby mothers were nearly three times more likely to believe that they were prepared to be new mothers compared to those in the no exposure control group.”

Voxiva has developed its programs to interact and engage with users. “On average, our users interact with a program 130 times. This may involve sending or receiving a text message, submitting data through an app, logging on to their personal health record or watching an educational video,” said Sims. “We believe behavior change happens when you combine a high volume of interactions, personalized messaging, and credible content—all delivered through a device that is with us every waking hour.”

According to a study commissioned by Nokia; people interact with their phones 150 times every day, they send or receive an average of 23 text messages, and place or receive 7 phone calls. “Mobile devices are with us every part of the day and we interact with them constantly, making them an amazing tool to support behavior change,” said Sims.

Voxiva has worked with leading organizations and experts to develop content. Care4life was developed in collaboration with the American Diabetes Association, Text2quit with the George Washington University School of Public Health and Text4baby with an extensive partnership including the Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies Coalition, American Academy of Pediatrics and American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. “Four years and one million users later, I think we can now safely say that digital health programs delivered through mobile devices have come of age,” said Sims.
