NEC Corporation of America (NEC) today announced the general availability and licensing in North America of its scale-out architecture database software, the InfoFrame Elastic Relational Store (IERS), which provides high availability and flexible scalability for rapid data growth.
The IERS is a new type of database software that is ideal for Big Data projects and the ever-expanding growth of data. It enables flexible system enhancements by using Key Value Stores (KVS¹) that keep pace as data volumes increase. By leveraging unique technologies developed by NEC Laboratories America², the software provides high-speed transaction processing and SQL access with a JDBC/ODBC interface, similar to a Relational Database. However, IERS’ unique three-layered architecture provides a high-performance, elastically scalable database designed for high-volume workloads at a fraction of the cost of traditional Relational Databases.
NEC is working with Assigncorp, a healthcare information technology company, to develop an application that enables healthcare providers to automate outreach messaging to their patients. For example, the application sends text messages or emails to patients reminding them of upcoming appointments, saving staff time usually spent on manual phone calls. Another potential use is the ability to send customized, patient specific letters announcing a new campaign such as flu shots or pediatric vaccinations.
“Our healthcare customers are looking for a more scalable solution than what is available on the market,” said Umesh Lalwani, CEO, Assigncorp. “NEC’s IERS software provides the technology, performance and, most of all, the scalability and storage capabilities to meet our customers’ needs. We’re excited about the possibilities.”
“Working with Assigncorp, NEC is providing a powerful, flexible and scalable solution that fits the needs of today’s healthcare customers,” said Mitsuhiro Murooka, vice president, Enterprise Technologies-IT, NEC Corporation of America.
Key benefits of the IERS include the following:
- With its three-layered architecture and in-memory implementation, offers high performance and cost effective database management system suited for high OLTP workloads
- Provides ability to scale-out/scale-in each layer independently without downtime to match the changes in numbers of connections, processing needs and data volume without suffering any bottleneck
- Includes built-in HA capabilities to avoid any downtime and leverages in-memory replication to protect transaction data
- Provides SQL interface to utilize existing knowledge for easy application development/migration
- Offers map/reduce interface using Hadoop linkage API to extract data for analysis purpose
More information on the InfoFrame Elastic Relational Store can be found here.
¹Key Value Stores consist of pairs of keys and values that allow the application to store its data based on a simple data model. Because of its simple architecture, it provides scalability and is often used for enterprise systems such as search engines.
²NEC’s patented technology enables a unique transaction processing concept called “microsharding technologies.”

The Internet of Things is tied together with a thin strand that is known as time. Coincidentally, at the core of nearly all data analytics is a timestamp. When working with time series data there are a few core principles that everyone should consider, especially across datasets where time is the common boundary. In his session at Internet of @ThingsExpo, Jim Scott, Director of Enterprise Strategy & Architecture at MapR Technologies, discussed single-value, geo-spatial, and log time series dat...

WebRTC defines no default signaling protocol, causing fragmentation between WebRTC silos. SIP and XMPP provide possibilities, but come with considerable complexity and are not designed for use in a web environment. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Matthew Hodgson, technical co-founder of the Matrix.org, discussed how Matrix is a new non-profit Open Source Project that defines both a new HTTP-based standard for VoIP & IM signaling and provides reference implementations.

Scott Jenson leads a project called The Physical Web within the Chrome team at Google. Project members are working to take the scalability and openness of the web and use it to talk to the exponentially exploding range of smart devices. Nearly every company today working on the IoT comes up with the same basic solution: use my server and you'll be fine. But if we really believe there will be trillions of these devices, that just can't scale. We need a system that is open a scalable and by using ...
