Three technology innovations making commerce and access control more secure took top honors last night at the first American SESAMES Awards on the opening night of the CARTES SECURE CONNEXIONS AMERICA 2014 here in Las Vegas. The awards, given to Oberthur Technologies, SkimProt Ltd. and Zwipe AS, recognize technology innovation for smart cards, digital security, identification, secure transactions and contactless technology developed for the U.S. market.
Twenty-three companies vied for this new award, based on the 19-year heritage of the SESAMES Awards held each year at the CARTES SECURE CONNEXIONS Exposition in France.
In the category of Emerging Payments, Oberthur Technologies was recognized for its Omni-channel Wallet, a seamless payment platform for online and proximity purchasing, integrating both couponing and loyalty applications. The payment solution, featuring an integrated flexible platform, a complete mobile application, and a prepaid card allows more ways to pay through all selling channels, regardless of the technology used (QR code, NFC, BLE, etc.).
Other finalists in the Emerging Payments category included ROAM for their RP750x EMV solution and Sequoia Retails Systems, Inc. for the QuadPoint Compact Register.
The American SESAMES Award for Card Manufacturing innovation went to SKIMPROT Ltd. for its SkimProt anti-skimming multilayer protective label. When placed above a bank card’s magnetic stripe SkimProt hides personal information of the cardholder, making the card skim proof, while also communicating with the ATM hardware with universal service codes and authorizing requests via a more secure EMV chip.
The two other finalists in this category included SmartDisplayer Technology Co., Ltd. for their iCARD4 e-paper display card and Oberthur Technologies for their Lasink color printing solution.
The American SESAMES Awards also recognized Zwipe AS in the Identification category for their Zwipe Biometric Card which brings biometric capabilities to existing ISO 1442-compatible access control card readers. The company showcased a contactless smart card credential with on-card fingerprint reading using 3D capacitive technology that resides on the contactless smart card, providing an easy, low-cost way to provide a biometric upgrade to access control systems.
DigitalPersona, Inc. were also a finalist in the Identification category for their DigitalPersona Altus authentication solution, along with GOTrust Technology Inc., for their SDencrypter Lite mobile device security.
“CARTES SECURE CONNEXIONS AMERICA 2014 is all about recognizing and sharing game-changing thinking and technologies shaping secure payment, access and identification markets,” said Isabelle Alfano, exhibition director of this conference. “These winners, and all our entrants, exemplify this commitment to advancing our industry.”
Winners of the American SESAMES Awards were selected by a judging panel including Daniel Chatelain, managing director of The Baypay Forum; Kevin Gillick, executive director, GlobalPlatform; Dan Inbar, CEO, Homeland Security Research Corp.; Donald Malloy, chairman of Oath; and Joe O'Konek, CEO of MRC/Merchant Risk Council.
