Digi-Key Sponsors 2014 MN State Robotics Tournament, Promoting Engineering and Technology Careers

Global electronic components distributor Digi-Key Corporation, the industry leader in electronic component selection, availability and delivery, today announced they are once again an event sponsor for the third annual Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) Robotics Tournament. The event takes place on Saturday, May 17 at Williams Arena Sports Pavilion on the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis.

Thirty teams comprising hundreds of high school engineering enthusiasts from across the state will gather at the tournament to battle student-designed, -built and -controlled robots in a game called Aerial AssistSM. Exercise balls approximately two feet in diameter will be launched, caught, and scored by the teams’ robots in an attempt to claim the most points and be declared the state champions.

“Digi-Key is pleased to support the MSHSL Robotics competition for the second year in a row as part of our commitment to technology curriculums and budding technology students at the high school level,” said Rick Trontvet, Vice President, Human Resources. “We look forward to presenting the Next Generation Innovator of the Year award to this year’s aspiring young engineers.”

More than Just a Tournament

As a featured event sponsor, Digi-Key representatives will be present at the event from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to speak with students who are interested in pursuing careers in technology or engineering. The company hopes to plant a seed in tech-focused students, graduates and working professionals to keep Digi-Key in mind when they are ready in the future for information technology or product technology support roles.

“Digi-Key is planning to add more than 200 new positions to its workforce this year and we will have representatives at the tournament to provide related details to interested individuals,” noted Trontvet. “Out of those 200, many are entry-level positions that will give talented individuals a foot in the door with Digi-Key – one of Minnesota’s largest and fast-growing global technology companies. With over $1.6 billion in sales revenue and over 3,000 employees, the company is in a great position to offer many exciting opportunities to technology-minded students and young professionals.”

Notable available jobs at Digi-Key include entry-level positions as an order fulfillment team member in the Product Distribution Center (PDC), as well as in other areas including inbound sales; customer service; and accounts receivable. Professional career-track opportunities at Digi-Key include application engineering; technical support; and a variety of IT positions in the areas of applications administration, EDI analysis, systems support, software engineering and web development.

The event begins at 8:45 a.m. Saturday, May 17. For more details, please visit www.mshsl.org/mshsl/robotics.asp.
