Software-Defined Enterprise WAN Code Selected as Winner of First ONUG SDN Hackathon

BOSTON, MA -- (Marketwired) -- 05/27/14 -- The Open Networking User Group (ONUG) (http://www.opennetworkingusergroup.com/) hosted its first SDN Hackathon at Spring ONUG 2014 showcasing the power of programmable networking and providing a glimpse of what a network software ecosystem could look like. Student teams from Cornell, Georgia Tech, Princeton, Yale, and developers from industry participated by coding for two days. Judging criteria included business potential, creativity, completeness, and technical depth. The judges included ONUG Board Members Aryo Kresnadi of FedEx, Carlos Matos of Fidelity, and Conrad Menezes, formerly of Sears.

The winning team focused on "Software-Defined Enterprise WAN" (https://github.com/AndreasVoellmy/wan-optimizer-onug-spring-2014) and developed a simple SDN application for the WAN that intelligently selects the uplink provider for each flow based on the type of traffic and the state of the network. The team included programmers and/or advisors: Andreas Voellmy, David Crosbie, Ed Henry, Eric Murray, Eric Yspeert, and Spiros Eliopoulos.

The runner-up was Team Pyretic, which addressed "Hardware Accelerated Programmable Application Delivery" (https://github.com/frenetic-lang/pyretic/tree/onug-hackathon) and hacked together a hierarchical controller designed to leverage the next generation of reconfigurable switches. The programmers on Team Pyretic included: Cole Schlesinger, Joshua Reich, Muhammad Shahbaz, Omid Alipourfard, and Srinivas Narayana.

"It's amazing what these programmers created in just two days," said Nick Lippis, ONUG co-chairman and founder. "The SD-WAN team demonstrated working code that switched WAN bandwidth based upon performance. This simple logic has the potential to conserve cost and improve utilization on the WAN uplinks for enterprise branch offices. Team Pyretic developed code that would allow the network to message trading applications that certain network conditions were present that could avoid or mitigate 'flash crashes.' All programs were presented to the ONUG community and open-sourced for the industry."
