500 Mayors Challenged to "Go the Extra Mile"

SACRAMENTO, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 05/29/14 -- Motivational author Shawn Anderson and his organization Extra Mile America are challenging 500 mayors and cities across the United States to recognize extra mile heroes in their cities and declare 11/1/2014 as Extra Mile Day.

In a time when many are demanding change and more opportunities, mayors are reminding people with the declaration of Extra Mile Day that individuals and organizations have the power to create change through their willingness to go the extra mile. Started in 2009 with 23 participating mayors, last year 444 cities made a declaration to recognize those in their communities who were "going the extra mile" in volunteerism and service to make the community better.

"We all talk about wanting change... happiness... more opportunity," says Anderson. "However, relying on others to make that happen is only wishing for life to get better. Taking personal responsibility... and going the extra mile individually... is where true success is found."

First spreading the "go the extra mile" message across the U.S. in 2009, Anderson used a symbolic 4,000-mile ocean-to-ocean bike ride. On the ride, the 47-year-old, non-bicyclist created motivational events in 21 national cities. At these events, Anderson interviewed over 200 people who had been recognized as going the extra mile in overcoming personal setback or who had risked everything in order to accomplish something extraordinary. After the 90-day tour, Anderson personally gave away $10,000 to those people whose stories he found especially inspiring. After the tour, he kept the "go the extra mile message" in the forefront with Extra Mile Day.

"Nothing changes in life if we keep doing the same thing over and over," Anderson states. "True changes in all areas of life come from doing more than the status quo, stepping outside of comfort zones, and going the extra mile."
