China Telecom driving OTT Partnership revenues with Veris O2P Platform

Operator has led the way in developing OTT Partnership strategy

Operators around the world are facing a threat to their business from new digital service providers and Over The Top (OTT) players.

Not many have formulated a definitive strategy in how to deal with this threat. Far fewer have actually put the business processes and supporting systems in place to turn this threat into a revenue-generating opportunity.

Which is what makes China Telecom Group so interesting.

The operator, which is the world’s largest in terms of subscribe numbers, recognised the threat posed by new digital service providers and formulated a Partnership Strategy back in 2011 – much earlier than many of its counterparts.

China Telecom chose to work with long-term partner, AsiaInfo, to address the challenge by developing an innovative digital service collaboration platform – which has since been productized as Veris Open Operational Platform (O2P).

O2P was developed to enable China Telecom to converge its assets with OTT partners to create new services, as well as expose its back office IT and network systems for the OTTs to use.

This platform has enabled China Telecom to monetise its IT and network capabilities, leverage partner relationships and start generating revenue.

Since launching O2P, China Telecom has continuously added partners in the digital services market and currently has over 20 partners (including cross verticals and other OTT enterprises) using O2P. These partners converge their digital service products with China Telecom’s communication products across fixed, mobile as well as IPTV lines of business.

In March 2014 the incremental revenue generated for China Telecom was over $170 million.

In recognition of the innovative digital approach China Telecom has taken with OTT partner collaboration, the operator was recently shortlisted for a TM Forum Excellence Open Digital Award.
