OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 06/09/14 -- His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, will present the Michener Award for outstanding public service in journalism, as well as the Michener-Deacon Fellowships and the Michener-Baxter Special Award, on Wednesday, June 11, 2014, at 6 p.m., during a ceremony at Rideau Hall.
2013 Michener Awards Finalists
Recognizing outstanding and unbiased public service in journalism, the award is presented to news organizations rather than to individuals: newspapers, broadcasting stations and networks, news agencies, periodicals, magazines and online journalism sources.

Michener-Deacon Fellowship for Investigative Journalism
This award was created to encourage excellence in investigative print, broadcast and online journalism. The winning fellow is expected to undertake a project that aspires to the criteria of the Michener Award, with emphasis on identifiable benefits for the public good, improvements in public policy, ethical standards, corporate governance or the lives of Canadians.
Ms. Rita Celli, Ottawa-based CBC journalist
Ms. Celli plans to examine the public policy concerns related to the profits generated by the mining industry.
Michener-Deacon Fellowship for Journalism Education
Dedicated to the advancement of the education of Canadian journalists, the fellowship supports a mature journalist-in-residence at a recognized Canadian school of journalism for one semester. The purpose of the fellowship is to enhance the education of both the applicant and the students enrolled in the journalism program.
Ms. Francine Pelletier, Montreal-based writer, independent filmmaker, columnist for Le Devoir
Ms. Pelletier will organize workshops on big data journalism and elements of digital information at Concordia University.
Michener-Baxter Special Award
This special award recognizes an individual whose work exemplifies the best in public service journalism.
