Many IT professionals are noticing a profound change in the way they are regarded by the businesses at which they work. Instead of being treated as a necessary evil, IT is becoming increasingly integrated into and respected by the business. Wisegate, a next generation IT advisory service, recently surveyed hundreds of senior level IT professionals to find out how their careers are being affected by this evolution and how businesses can better retain critical IT talent.
To Move Forward, They’re Moving Out
Based on the survey findings, the first in a series of reports is out today. Hello, I Must Be Going: Hard Facts on Soft Skills unveils a scary finding: nearly two-thirds of IT professionals both expect and want to leave their current companies within two years. The reason? They want more learning opportunities to develop business skills, including increasing business abilities, influencing others and building relationships.
While 72 percent of survey participants believe IT is taken seriously by business, only 34 percent believe they have an opportunity to advance in their current companies. Nearly two-thirds (62%) expect to be moving on in their career within the next two years and 47 percent believe that advancing their career will require them to leave their current company. It is not a desire for more money that’s driving IT professionals to move. Within a set of eight things that might positively affect job and life, respondents to the Wisegate survey ranked “more money” sixth. The top three responses included more opportunities to learn, more positive feedback from the business side of the organization and more challenging work.

“One important take-away from this survey is that IT professionals aren’t getting the business expertise skills they need at their current companies and positions, and are therefore looking elsewhere,” said Wisegate CEO Sara Gates. “So the good news is, employers can truly stand out by making business skills training a priority.” Other lessons include:
- If you have IT talent you wish to keep, it is no longer enough to nurture their technical side. IT professionals are increasingly aware of the critical need for them to develop the “soft skills” normally associated with other parts of the business.
- If you are in IT and looking to develop your own career, be aware that while your current company may not have specific opportunities for developing soft skills, others may not either.
